Cold Feet

So my friend and I have decided to setup our first major UrbEx trip to the old Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, MD. The hospital is currently being demolished and it won't be there for much longer so we planned on doing it tomorrow. To be quite frank I am really afraid. I believe the only reason I afraid is that if we are caught we most likely won't be able to talk the police down and will be charged with a misdemeanor. During our scouting mission we found that the fence surrounding the demo site (which we thought was impenetrable) has two gates that are only tied of with a short length of rope. Getting in the building appears just as easy because most of the windows are smashed and the majority of the doors are missing. I'm just afraid someone will see us. We are going to dress as construction workers so that might help a bit. Any advice?

Don't announce your plan on a public board if you're worried about being found out, might be a good tip
Other than that, just act natural and don't worry too much. What are they going to do to you, take away your birthday? :p

Just wear a white tshirt and jeans. Thats what i did when i walked into the construction site at DC General. Nobody looked twice at me. I mean if you want to bring a hard helmet to be extra safe then go right ahead. If you just walk in without looking sketchy people will just generally ignore the fact that you are there. Its when you stand around waiting for people to not be looking is when you look the most suspicious.

I understand where you are coming from. My recommendation would be if you get caught, don't lie or try to pull a fast one on the cop/guard/concerned citizen, just tell them the truth and hope for the best.

This has been a policy of mine for a while now. I got pulled over a few months ago for having expired registration on my car. My registration was out by about 7 months. When the cop asked me why I haven't gotten it renewed he suggested that I just forgot to update it. I told him, no, I didn't forget, just don't think the state of Florida deserves my money.

He took my license and insurance info back to his car and came back with a ticket (surprise, surprise). As he was explaining the ticket to me, he told me that after not updating the registration on a vehicle for 6 months the charge becomes a misdemeanor but he was going to cut me a break and just give me a ticket for the infraction.

I guess the point that I'm trying to make is just be cool and honest if you get caught. You would be surprised with how far that can get you. Me being completely honest got me out of a misdemeanor and just a ticket.

If the demo people are already working there, they won't appreciate your presence. They know who works for their company more than likely. They also are liable if you are injured, plus they may have equipment that can be stolen or vandalized on site.

Sounds like you waited past the prime time to see this site. Stay low, and don't advertise your presence. Lots of other places though, easy come, easy go, ashes to ashes and dust to dust, ain't no big fuss.

Your security measures were inadequate.
How unfortunate for you.

Just relax. It's normal to be nervous on your first explore, but from what you've posted it sounds like it'll actually be a piece of cake. Once you're done and at home processing your photos, you'll be laughing at how scared you were. Play it cool, get in, get your shots, get out, and have a toast to yourselves at a bar on the way home, for popping your urbex cherry.

I don't know how shit is in MD, but here in OK trespassing is only a $65 fine. Take the risk, unless you can't afford it.

My exploring buddy was born in there. That's one of the reasons he agreed to do it.

Age also plays a huge role, I don't know how old you are but if you're 14 then dressing like a construction worker isn't going to help you.

As someone else said, white t-shirt and jeans, with at most a hard hat. I would not go in wearing reflective vests, carrying a clipboard, etc. There is a good chance someone will walk up to you and ask who you are with or something to that extent, and I'm sure they wouldn't look too highly on someone in a construction site pretending to be a construction worker.

Yeah, I would agree that dressing as construction workers is overkill for something like this. There are some places where that's a really good idea, but here it sounds like it would just make things awkward if you got caught. Dress normally, and if you were to get caught, just tell the truth, and 98% of the time they'll just ask you to leave. From what you've described, it sounds very easy and low-risk. Just go for it!

I like to wear two pairs of thick socks when going on missions. Extra ankle support and they keep my tootsies nice and toasty. ;)

My advice to people who want to get into exploring but can't understand or negotiate risk, or are simply too scared to do anything, is to find a new hobby.

The point of the hobby is to turn this urbanized, globalized, centralized world upside down and experience what others won't or can't. It has inherent risk, not unlike traveling abroad or taking on a demanding job like radio tower maintenance.

And you know what? Not a lot of people are comfortable traveling, or even leave their country, and a lot fewer people climb towers so that I can get 3G in downtown Horse Piss Creek, Wisconsin.

If you're too scared to walk into a building that's off-limits, I recommend video games. Some of the graphics in modern consoles are quite good.

In KY the cops set the dog loose on you, just for shits. Because maiming photographers is more important than stopping actual criminals...

I don't doubt it for a second.

Just a couple weeks ago we had the Tulsa Tower Guy, crazy bastard climbed up a broadcast tower, stayed there for like a week, longest stand off in our cities history, and all he got was a $65 fine. They say they were going to give him mental treatment, but who knows. He cost our city countless tax dollars, and he got off with a $65 slap on the wrist.

TL;DR - If your going to commit a crime, best to do it in OK. Keep in mind we all have guns, so be careful where you trespass. We also have the death penalty, so don't kill anyone here. But climb to your hearts content, ClearChannel doesn't give a shit. (Sorry my TL;DR was also TL;DR)
