| | | New Feature: Ability to make your own threads private or public. < on 8/9/2011 3:36 PM >
| | | I've added a nice new feature. Now when you post a thread in restricted sections, such as the regional sections, you can make the thread Private or Public after the fact. Simply scroll to the bottom of the thread and click the "Make Private" or "Make Public" button. You can also see whether or not the thread is private, and who has access to viewing it. Enjoy! -av

| | | Great feature! Can a basic member make one of their threads private (and continue to be able to see it)?

|
Full members, of course. In the case of threads that started out public then were switched to private, full members, plus anyone who posted in the thread before the switch was made.

I didn't write the code so I can't say for sure, but I believe the answer is 'yes'.

| | | I don't think it's working properly. This thread says "This thread is in a public category, and can't be made private." but it's on a private board.

I think it's working properly, it's just that Av understandably didn't program a separate message for private boards, where thread visibility is already restricted to membership of that forum. The threads are nominally public, but to a far more limited audience, and inaccessible to the google (we hope). Thus they are effectively more private than private? I agree though that the message could be made more situationally relevant.

| | | Hi, Yes, Kowalski is correct -- the thread is NOT visible to search engines or anyone else, the message is just based on the "Category type" in the database. Private boards don't have "Full/Basic Member" level restrictions, so that's why the message says it's a "public category". Keep in mind that until recently, this message was only visible to mods. I'll update it to be more clear. You can always test if any thread is visible to the "public" or search engines by copying the link to the thread, logging out, and then trying to open that link. -av

hehe Thank you whoever cooked up this feature. I haven't made full user yet but I appreciate being able to post my pics privately in the meantime, the places I'm posting I don't want showing up on google =p I've made one big photo shoot post and was able to make it private since I saw this post. I can confirm that after I made it private at the bottom it said it was viewable by full members and 'blah blah blah' - the few non-full members who had already responded to it. So all is working well far as I can tell. Anyway, about to post a few outings =D making them private only, thanks for the addition mod-type-folks
