| | Camera gear question < on 8/4/2011 7:45 PM >
| | | Hey all, I've been on here a while lurking but been serious for the past few months on here. I been exploring since the early 90s. Anyway, I just bought a Nikon D3000 and it came with 18mm-55mm and 55mm-200mm lens and a lens hood. Im sure this is a remedial question, but what is the purpose of the Lens hood and what are the benefits of using it. Thanks for any input or information. Sarcasm is enjoyable as well =)

| | | 1) Protects the front element of your lens 2) Useful for avoiding lens flares 3) More contrast in some cases (especially with indirect light sources)

| | | When light enters the lens from the side, it goes through all the elements sideways. It causes those lines of circles you see sometimes.

| | | I'm beginning to try my hand at long exposure night photography. Does using a lens hood help or hinder long exposure night photography? Pros? Cons? Thanks.

| | | With long exposure night shoots it shouldn't really affect all that much but it can prevent some light from getting into the shoots. I like to keep mine on my camera so i don't hit something with the front of my lens or run something across it on accident . [last edit 8/5/2011 1:40 PM by chicken007 - edited 1 times]

| | | Helps. The less stray light getting in, often from outside your actual subject, the better. (There may well be "artistic exceptions," but while you're just learning, you want the control and less random.)
