| | | He will need to pay property taxes unless he's a senior citizen, although even then he would need to pay the back taxes on the property. So the story is misleading.
Your security measures were inadequate. How unfortunate for you. |

Pay the government back taxes? Absolutely. The real question is: who is the owner? The bank who owns the mortgage or the mortgagee who hasn't paid his loans? Either way, sounds like if the owner leaves the property to rot, it goes back to the city or to anyone who can claim usufructory ownership.

| | | Took a drive and stopped by the house in question. 1. This is the house in question. Not bad for $16!!!
2. The dude even has himself a nice Santa Fe... Wonder how he screwed honest citizens out of it?
3. He has no trespassing signs EVERYWHERE.
I went up and knocked on the door, the dude came and talked to me for a minute or two, but he absolutely refused to let me get him on camera and only told me what the article already had established before he asked me to leave and not take any more pictures, in not so nice words.

| | | Damn. Interesting stuff Capt. Slow. Thanks for popping over. I think the guy is stupid for not talking to more people. I doubt he'll get away with ownership of the house, but in this bad economy, if he acted friendly and pushed this, he could get a nice book deal for the story of his living rent free for a year or however long he can pull it off. On the other hand the neighbors have prolly been hating at full blast. PS...as long as you are in the hood, will you pick me up one of those houses, I will send you 20 dollars. Keep the change. i bet the chance at owning a 300,000$ home for under $20 helps him put up with it.

| | | LOL, this is funny. As long as he is doing it legally, and using legal means to do it, more power to him. I think it's funny that his neighbors are all pissed off. Too many of the wealthy and "otherwise removed from real life" individuals make all nice and pretty as long as it doesn't affect them. But when it happens in their back yard, then they get all up in arms and act like its criminal. The guy is following the law. What more can you ask? I hope he gets the damn thing.

| | | Damn right^ If those neighbors had known about this, they'd have been mowing the lawn and putting a few chairs in there to claim ownership as well, and they would SAY they were doing it to protect their own home. Also, who knows whether or not the squatter is really spending all that much time there. I do hope Capt. Slow keeps an eye on it.

Eh, what's he gonna do? The police are watching him like a hawk and he knows it, he knows if he so much as laid a finger on me or said the wrong thing in a loud enough voice and the cops would be all over him for 'assualt' and drag him out of the house.

| | | Let's see how long he stays in the house. He needs to pay off the back taxes, be able to afford the current taxes based on current assessments - which won't be pretty for a house of that size and neighborhood, and maintain or improve upon the property per law for him to keep the land. I don't know how I feel about that. I just bought my first house by saving, saving and saving, and put 20% down and used a conventional mortgage. I bought within my means (cheaper than renting!), sacrificed some things and made amends. There is an abandoned house next door that I've been kicking squatters out of. And there is Section 8 housing next door that the tenants hardly maintain or do much with except deal drugs out of. I'd probably be one of the neighbors up in arms o_o
