Nike [Control] Site in Terrell

Hi,

Here are some of photos of the Nike Control Site in Terrell. Unfortunately, there's not much left to see at this site. All of the buildings collapsed over time from neglect and what remained has been totally razed and hauled off. The only things left are the foundations, some yellow painted handrails, and the large ABAR (Alternate Battery Acquisition Radar) tower. There might have been a "no trespassing" sign on the tree by the entrance but if there was, I didn't see it and drove right it.

Here's a shot looking at a foundation at the radar tower behind it:

Generator Building foundation:

Battery Control Building foundation:

Overgrown stairway to the radar pads:

Close up of the ABAR tower (no I didn't climb it Captain_Slow!! ):

And a view looking back towards the road entrance:

The owner of the nearby launch site lives on that property and also runs a business out of one of the old missile pits. When it cools down some I'm going to check it out with his permission. I'll be sure to post some photos of my visit when I do make it up there.

-D

Thanks, glad you liked them. I'm looking forward to getting some shots of the Terrell launch site soon. My plan is to visit all 8 Texas Nike sites at some point. I need to hit the Austin sites pretty quick. I liked the thread about your Elroy launch site visit with Superlocrian.

Well the ones in Texas are actually pretty complete compared to a lot of other Nike sites across the U.S. The Terrell IFC site being not so much of course.

Wonder if anyone here has explored any of the old Atlas F sites around Abilene?

This is in Terrell? I grew up in Wills Point, the town right across the county line, and I never knew about this place.

I went to the one that 2x was talking about - the one that someone lives in. It was really cool and he has done a lot to fix up the command center and make it livable. The Silo has had all the water pumped out and he actually has a working hydraulic piston to open one of the two 70 ton doors.

Any pictures RevSM? I'd sure love to see them... That's the one in Oplin that you visited, right?

Wonder if he still gives tours...?

Here you go. Vertical panorama of the silo. Even so, pictures don't do it justice.

Been down in the old Atlas Silo at Ft. Phantom Lake and Oplin and Lawn back in the 70's and 80's lots of times. Went to the old Nike site at Ft. Phantom last month and it is still in good shape for its age. Need to take and post some pics.

That's very cool about the Atlas sites you've been in. I guess they were totally abandoned in the 70s and easy to get into?

You didn't get into the Ft. Phantom Hill Nike sites did you? When I was there last someone was living at the control site. I asked for a tour through the fence but was politely turned down Maybe I just caught him at a bad time... The launch site was locked up tight with no one around.

As for the other Abliene Nike sites (DY-50) I did get a tour of the control site and once the weather cools down, I should be a able to get a tour of the launch site.
