Generally I don't bother opening up any manholes near curb grates as they usually only provide access to the pipe leading from the grate. Manholes in the middle of fields are generally a good bet and as a number of people have mentioned, so is looking at maps, both topographical and hydrological.

If I find an inflow that is perhaps.... 20 feet high? Does that mean the whole tunnel is that high? Seems a bit absurd. There's not very high flow. Possibly tidal halfway through, though. I'll likely pop a manhole in a linear grass lot further down, easier access...
