I'm a bluntly honest and open person (to a fault) but I tend to avoid making eye contact with other people (I've got the whole anti-social/aspergers awkwardness thing going on there.)

Me too. I suck at lying. Honesty is always the best policy IMO. It has worked against me in several job interviews and when applying for places to live, though. I would rather lie by omission and tell as little as possible than make up a story because I can NEVER seem to pull it off. My husband is a master at this, though, and can talk his way out of or into ANY situation. I wish I had his skillz. I also wish he was into exploring with me.

When it comes to UE I never have anything to hide. Simply telling the truth and saying, "I'm a photographer and wanted to take pictures of the building" is always easier for me.

Best policy, I say.

I had some explorers cornered a couple months back, they were in their teens and tried lying. Of course, I've got over ten years on the job and could see right through it. I mentioned this site and they fell silent. I laughed, told them it was cool, gave them my typical advice, and told them to split.

The only reason I was there was that an old lady across the street reported them as entering an abandoned house. Seriously guys, 90% of the time we (police) even look for trespassers is from citizen complaints. Let's work on reducing that, please. All the guys I work with could seriously care less.

I got a serious "talking to" by a cop at some active train tracks. Luckily because it was my first time getting caught he let me off with a trespassing warning...next time he said it would be a $120 fine for trespassing and if caught vandalizing (which i would never do) like trying to light the bridge on fire and all this random shit that teenagers normally do there it could be anything from a $10 000 fine to 2 years in jail.

i can ALMOST understand you saying you heard about it on the interwebz but to specify the .ca portion of the site is...really not good. they probably already know its online somewhere - some DOT COM but to give up .ca, to me, goes totally against this site. beyond that - was this location one that is viewable to all or just full members?
ive only had one run in with any level of authority while exploring/shooting. you have to be totally aware of where you are - i do research on the places i go to well in advance. i knew there was a hiking trail not far from the school so with backpack and hiking shoes on - i just confidently told him i was hiking through - went a little off trail and saw this cool building and just wanted to get a closer look. camera was in bag - he didnt ask to see inside it - just told me that if i continued on 'across this field youll pick the trail back up' i pulled out a power bar and my water - he got in his cruiser and left and i went back inside the school.

are you not paying attention when you go to these places? ears work pretty well for me. I hear footsteps I duck out for a sec and wait, usually it's nothing, sometimes its scrappers and sometimes its other explorers or it's nothing. point being, paying attention is a key part of not getting caught, at least for me and my experience. failing this much blows. Maybe bring a friend to keep lookout next time? or look around before you enter and exit instead of just stepping in and out of a place?

I've thought about this. It'd be easy enough to make up cards saying Jane Doe, Shenadoah Valley Urban Ruin Appreciation Society or some shit. Even better if you have a dedicated exploring partner who can carry one too. And if not, well, who cares if you are the sole member of said society.

Helps to not be a teenager and be an adult that looks like he or she knows what he's doing too lol...

Case in point:

If people see this guy wandering around an abandoned building, they probably will correctly assume he's just there to take photos:

But if you look like this, then be prepared for them to call the cops on ya!

Conversely, (while its not a good idea to dress like a douchebag) if you are young or look young, you can always play off like you're a ditzy art student. All depends on the situation. If you're trying to ask permission or gather information, better to look professional. If you're of a "better to beg forgiveness than ask permission" mindset, might help if you look like you don't know any better. Without looking like you're up to no good, of course.

I'd have to say honesty is always the best thing.

But then again I've used the 'art-student' excuse many times. Depends on the location really. If I'm in a college town / around one, it works all the time. But if I'm downtown in some city, chances are they wont take it.

It also helps to look like you're taking photos. A tripod in hand or a camera around your neck. Hell, even a 'business' card with a link to a Flickr account just to prove that you take yourself seriously.

As long as you're not an ass, cops are usually pretty cool. At least that's been my experience.
