ah jeez I never thought about running into meth labs. damn. I don't think my areas so bad that I only have to worry about the average squatter that doesn't speak english, but running into a meth lab would completely ruin the hobbie, even If I did get away without a scratch.

and the way you described the signs of a meth lab sounded like this abandonment I was in the other day.

but anyways good advice, I dont smoke myself but maybe I can get someone to buy me some smokes to keep in my bag in case there is an unruly hobbo.

I think that advice was more for the people who can legally carry smokes around with them. I don't think it would be smart to have something like that on you while exploring. If you get caught, and the police find that, they're probably not going to buy into "I just carry these around as gifts for homeless people."

I guess it depends on the location, though.

I guess I should probably write something down here.

Nowhere is safe from meth cooks. Actually, the smaller the town, the bigger the meth problem, always. It's simple math, smaller populations = less taxes = less funding for police = fewer officers with bigger workoads = very easy to get away with it.

The ONLY reason you should not carry smokes if you are underage, it'll only go to make a bad situation worse if you get caught.

Yeah, it's a pretty intense story. Some real-world proof that meth labs DO spring up in abandonments, and that there ARE warning signs.
I don't explore a whole lot of abandonments, but when I do, I keep my eye out for broken glass and propped doors.

In many places it's only illegal for minors to buy cigarettes not posses them. And if you're a minor you'll get off scot free and then your non-felonious record will be sealed when you turn 18. Enjoy it while it lasts.

It's up to you, I didn't know it wasn't illegal for minors to carry ciagrettes. If you don't bring some change or acouple dollar bills.

Oh dear... I'm a little worried about urbexing now that I've read these comments. I can't legally have tobacco or weapons* (including pepper spray) in my possession and I'm also very small and weak. The person I plan to urbex with is in the same boat, except she's a lot taller than me. Am I pretty much screwed if I have a bad encounter?

*The only legal "weapons" I'd be able to have are things like a tripod and flashlight.

It sounds scary but if you use common sense you'll be just fine. My father used to tell me, if it looks like shit and smells like shit it probably is shit. Sound advice in every way. If a place looks like a bad idea and smells like a bad idea, it IS a bad idea. Once you run into a hobo for the first time, this stuff becomes easy.

If you are worried about running into someone and need a weapon and are underage, carry wasp spray. It's less painful than pepperspray but damned it if won't hurt someone bad and it'll blind them for an hour or so, plus it shoots farther, more accurately, there's no blow-back onto you, and it costs $3. Best of all, it's legal, it's just wasp spray. Just DO NOT EVER tell an officer that you have it to use as a weapon or protection, EVER, then they can stick you with the weapon charge. Just tell them it's for wasps, last time you got stung and you didn't want to get stung this time and stick with that.

On the other hand, if something looks and smells like shit in an abandonment, it's probably just actual shit, not a metaphor for dangerous situations.

Thanks for the advice, it's nice knowing it's not completely hopeless for me after all. I'll definitely have to get some wasp spray before my first urbexing trip!

Captian_Slow...i agree with this^^^ i have ended up running into people who don't speak english a lot more than anyone else and they have gotten pretty pissed off quick bc I don't speak their language and don't understand why i am there. I usually just put up my hands and slowly show them my camera and mime something to the effect of im taking pictures and in doing so i haven't had too much of a bad time, except once where i booked the fuck out of there.

I actually ran into a family in new haven once in a place i was checking out. The husband, im assuming, put all of the family behind him and got pretty upset, so i mimed taking photos and actually showed them the photos and they then started showing me around their place. it worked out very well.

but what Im getting at, is that sometimes this is as much a case as the rest of the advice you have put down here so maybe you could give some advice, if you have any or have experience with this type of situation, or if anyone else has had this happen?

also, the whole hobo vs crackhead going and hand shaking thing i get a little worried about because a lot of the homeless population has some type of psychotic disorder or another mental disorder and it can become very bad very quick if something goes wrong. so id just advice try and avoid anyone at all costs, even the "hipsters" might be little "thugs" and try and jack ur shit from you. you really can not be sure of who or what someone has ever and i always air on the side of caution and never approach anyone, except for the example i used above, that was a really out of context one and only time ive had something like that happen.

That's a really good idea. I'll modify it and add some advice. Living and exploring in North/ South Texas, probably a good 1/2 of the squatters I run into are Mexican illegals that don't speak a word of English. Running into hobos that don't speak your language is about the same as anyone else, just use common sense and don't come off as intimidating or dominating. Offer him a cigarette, mimic taking pictures with your camera, if the hobo seems calm enough show him the pics you've taken (but NEVER take your hand off the camera or your arm out of the wriststrap!). Usually they'll calm down, but most of the time hobos that don't speak any English are a LOT more skittish than other bums, but odds are they'll look for a chance to leave right away and go hide somewhere... If a bum that is an American citizen gets caught by the police and arrested, he gets a hot meal and a warm bed... If an immigrant hobo is caught he gets deported, so you know they'll be super wary of anyone that comes into their space. If he gets agitated and doesn't calm down right away, just leave. They've also got a lot less to lose than a regular bum.

For example... Just the other day, Rawshooter and Weedhopper rolled into town and I took them up to the Peanut dryer in Aubrey. There is a homeless guy living under the silos, and today he was in. We went into the main building and started shooting pictures, the hobo wandered over and approached us. He didn't speak a word of english, and kept muttering "I live here" over and over, kind of agitated. So we just showed him our cameras, motioned to the buildings, I offered him a smoke, and then he calmed down, and watched us take pictures from a ways back for about 5 minutes and then left. No big deal.

But then again, I was knee deep in a rather large abandoned house in Denton, exploring alone like an idiot. I turned a corner into a bedroom and walked straight into a little fiesta of three guys rolling joints and about to light up. I say "hey guys", and take a step forward, they all start yelling in spanish, I try to show them my camera and they all stand up, so I turned and ran like a madman, heard steps behind me for a little ways then just a few calls of " PINCHE GRINGO!" and then I was in my truck, beating for the highway.

So, it can go bad fast. Use common sense.

exploring alone like an idiot.

i feel like any situation can go bad fast regardless if they speak English or not, that's why i worrisome with the whole go an be pals and hand them a cig. maybe its just because im a girl and more worried about other things that can happen to me from a man or men i run into that i am sooooooooo never ever having happen. so no cig giving from me haha!

i feel the whole use common sense is good and do not explore alone ever. i did that once and it was a mistake, foot went through a nail and i had to hobble by myself quite a distance, now what would have happened in a ran into people on top of that? yea i dont even want to think about it. so im glad you felt comfortable doing so, i just feel that the biggest advice i can ever give anyone is stay away from people you run into, take that or leave it as you feel it pertains to you and how you feel about run ins, and also never ever travel alone anywhere regardless if you have been there a hundred times.

i follow murphy's law of what can go wrong will go wrong. its kept me safe and sound, unless i was just itching one day and ended up going alone. needless to say im never doing that again
