Barnard said the man appears to have climbed the entire tower, leased by Richland Tower to WWJ-TV.

Sounds like this fucker didn't do his research right and climbed the broadcast mast, probably at night after they reduced power because during the day he would have been thoroughly cooked before he reached the top.

Heh. 8 mile. If it was a suicide, that's a damn courageous/odd way to do it. If not, it's prime example of what not to do. Either way, sad.

As his body heated from the inside-out from the radiation he probably shed layers, it was windy and they probably blew away.

The length of an FM wave is ~30m/100ft. Being within 100' of the transmitter mast for prolonged periods of time is enough to cause permanent damage to your eyes and inner organs.

First indicator of a dangerous exposure is a intense warmth in your ankles, as fluid is highly concentrated over as short space. He would become disorientated and his vision would have started to get blurry then would whiteout to grayout to black. His eyes would boiled like eggs dropped onto a skillet and internal organs would have become warmer until the liquid bearing organs burst first, he would probably have lost consciousness before this.

Tasty.

During night, unlike AM arrays, FM transmitters operate at the same power level during daytime.

Yes, but he did make it. How disorientated could he be?

this is why I have strong reservations about local towers, even when they are supposedly 'out'

If he made it to the absolute top he must have been doing half OK, probably realised he was done for then maybe made the best of it/ gave up with a view?

Go.. IN.. turbines...

When I first posted I worried it might have been a base jump or explore gone bad. In view of the new info - I'm with the nut job theory.

The thing about the lack of clothing makes me vote either "nut job," or some sort of youthful dare gone awry.

Righto, wasn't sure, must have climbed fast then. "Top of the tower" doesn't equal "top of the mast". He'd probably only climbed to the top of the lattice tower which is deadly in itself given the 100ft/30m band of radiation kicking off.

Cell transmitters get pretty warm even within safe working distance, so a high powered transmitter would kick off a lot of heat and the climb itself is very strenuous even with the proper gear to rest every 50-100 ft or so.

I've climbed in the winter ... a few layers and uninsulated gloves is all you need for the climb, anything more and you'd be boiling.

Considering that tower's a candelabra, he had at least two antennas worth of wattage passing through him up there. According to the IEEE and ICNIRP guidelines for RF exposure a 200lb male would start having acute health problems at something just shy of 400W within the aforementioned 100'. Each of those antennas would be pumping out far more than that. Even LPTV stations transmit up to 15kW, so a major station candelabra like that would be BIG ERP figures.
