and by "Bay Area" i mean mostly East Bay (for this set). Some are from places in the db, some aren't. Also, these were all shot with my cute little Canon PowerShot, so no expert photography here.

Most of this was solo, because my friends can't differentiate between a storm drain and a "decaying pipe filled with raw sewage". pm me if anybody ever wants to get out there (not limited to draining)

I was doung some work related draining a while back and while walking along noticed a glint of gold on the ground in a pipe joint where the mortar had worn out. It was a broken piece of a gold chain. I realized joints act kind of like a sluice box filtering out the heavier gold.(The cobblestone in Pic 4 looks perfect) In the next 2 days I found 2 different gold earrings and a small gold band> Nothing particuarrly valuable but keep an eye on the ground while draining you may get lucky.

4 and 6 came out really well for just using a point and shoot. I might be down to do some draining in the near future. Although I didn't bring the right tools to gain access to the last one, I know of some cool underground locations if ya need some.

Is cobblestone a certain creek (that I won't name here) in Berkeley?

Thanks for these. They look incredible. I've never done a drain, but feel compelled to now.

TUNNELbug hasn't done a drain? It seems like you're missing out on a large sub-category of tunnel. In fact in my own limited experience I've always found the best tunnels to be drains (at least for exploring, transportation is a different issue.)

Hey thanks everybody. Even though it was a point n' shoot, i WAS using a tripod and doing whatever long exposure that the camera could handle (15 second max, with little to adjust past that. That was REALLY a pain in places like the first picture). So don't think I was just walking around and casually snapping these.

HA HA. The irony... I know... I've done all sorts of tunnels, but never a "Drain" in the traditional sense of the word. Various underground spaces that were (perhaps) meant for conveyance of water, but never a specific type of underground water channel that is built by a municipal authority or private contractor specifically to convey the city's waste water

These photos are great. I'm with Tunnelbug; I haven't been draining, but am tempted. Good work.

These photos are awesome. I'd love to hear about the location if you don't mind PM'ing me with info.
Or if not, just keep me in mind if you're ever thinking of going back. I'd love to tag along.

Sorry, sort of a newbie question... When I first went Urbexing I just brought comfortable kind of walking/hiking gear and my camera. I know some places require dust masks and stuff, but... What do drains usually call for? Waterproof boots, I imagine... Anything else come standard?

Great pics. Thanks for posting that. A couple of those sections look like the classic T*****al drain. Good memories. A friend used to have a set of keys for the entry point at the dog park, and we went to one end then a mile towards the bay, and turned back.
Yikes. I'm getting old. That was in 2002.
Cobblestones must be a different drain?

Haha actually none of it was in the T-drain, even though I can see how you'd think that (great place).

These were from drains in 3 different creeks in the East Bay, 2 of which are in the DB, one of which is a little find of my own.

Cool pictures! I shoot with a Powershot when I don't want to bring the Rebel along. I'd love to check out some drains in the Bay Area - I'm in Mountain View for the summer. We only have a few nice big drains around central NC.
