I LOVE winter exploring! Especially going to icky dirty smelly places. Everything just seems cleaner and more sanitary. As long as everything is frozen solid there's usually no smell at all.

There's a downside though. Last weekend I was exploring the neighborhood I grew up in and thought I'd go for a stroll around the lake.

Alone.
At -25C.
At 3am.

For the record, stepping through lake ice in those circumstances is rather shocking.

In the winter months I'm extra weary of sketchy flooring.

Dirty ice (floating on deep, dark waters) can look a lot like a cement floor in a dark room.

I had an experience: walking through the woods mid-winter, at night, -10 degrees F, and suddenly I heard the cracking noise. Luckily the water was only a few inches deep. I thought I was going into a pond or one of the marshy areas nearby. That got my heart rate going!

Reviving a thread that's over 8 months old? Holy crap.

Sorry, what was that you were saying about forever alone?

I suppose I should read the dates, lol. I found myself reading about winter exploration and decided to add my two cents.

Well, winter is coming up...

Well, winter's almost here, anyway!

I will say, despite the cold, winter is my favorite time to explore. ESPECIALLY with a fresh untouched coat of snow and ice!

I think I'll stay underground for the winter. Lots of caves around here to explore. Nice warm caves!

Take things inside. The first-posted-on-the-internet urban exploration was mostly indoor stuff.

As TuxThePenguin mentioned earlier in this thread (and I reiterate because of the plethora of NE roof collapses lately) be mindful that structures that may not be perfectly stable already are under a LOT of stress in some arias.
Where I live (here in MA) everything from houses, schools, warehouses, and yeah abandonments have been collapsing; some of them completely.
So be mindful, careful.
