| | Guards < on 1/23/2011 8:56 PM >
| | | Hey guys. There's a place nearby that I'm planning to go with some friends, and old mental hospital. We've been doing some research, and we've hit a little problem. While there's no fences or alarms or anything, it IS guarded. Apparently there's an unguarded tunnel we can get through, and if so this shouldn't be an issue. But if we do get caught, what should we say? P.S. We're not taking knives or stuff like that with us, as apparently that adds to the charge if we're caught. There have been threads about this, but not for this particular situation. These aren't really police, but privately hired guards. The reason they're here is because a small number of the buildings of the facility are still actively used, and the abandoned parts are a hell of a good place to hide. I think they only patrol outside, and not in the building itself, so getting in is the hard part. We're going to scout it probably within the next week. Anything in particular we should look for in order to make entry easier? Thanks for any advice.

| | | I guess if you are sure they aren't cops, and you think you can get away, don't waste time explaining yourself and just run like hell! Keep in mind though some places use off duty cops. or you could try telling the truth... i guess. It all depends on how serious they are. Do more research and just figure it out. You could just ask them if they are cops pull up to one of them and ask for directions to some random place. Then you could just get into a small conversation with them and probe them for "intel" [last edit 1/23/2011 9:36 PM by Captain Redbeard - edited 1 times]

| | | It can be TOO well guarded, can it? I mean, if we find this supposed tunnel it should be fine. And besides, I think it's worth it. Gotta love Google street view.

| | | Just slip the guards a few Jacksons and you should be alright. Alright this will take alot of recon. First, see if you can spot the guard(s) and try to see how many there are. Who knows how many there might be so keep your distance between you and them. Second, see if they take any particular route while patrolling. Most guards have a path they walk around premises. Third, time them. If it takes a guard "x" amount of time to walk around the building then you know you have "x" amount of time to try and find a POE. As for the tunnel, who said it was unguarded? If you know about it then i'm sure they know about it and there's procedures in place to prevent people from accessing it. Recon that the best you can aswell.

I've been caught with a hunting knife before while committing a "crime." It didn't complicate things, but then again, we weren't arrested as result of said "crime." That said, carrying anything that could be construed as a weapon or break/enter tools can complicate your situation if you're caught, depending on your jurisdiction. If you're packing things that can be misconstrued, you'll be a the mercy of the arresting officer. Best to pack a camera a flashlight, and leave the questionable stuff at home.

| | | Looks like the perfect place to pull over to let the dog take a pee break - you've been traveling for hours - right... And the poor girl's feeling carsick - right... Be so friggin obvious they have to respond - and see how long it takes. Bonus if the dog will come when called (so you don't lose him/her) and just happens to "chase an animal" towards or even into the building.

I've used that one. Hell, I've even followed real cats into abandonments. Or "I was looking for the washroom. Can you help? I'm desperate." When I get caught, I just start walking out, usually toward the main exit rather than the way I came in. If the guard wants to talk to me he'll have to follow me, and if he wants to detain me he'll have to physically stop me. Though I should point out this advice might not work on non-Korean security.

| | | If you get caught, just give up and say, " Ok. I'm leaving." and then move for an exit. They are not allowed to physically stop you from leaving. If they do, any arrest made after that for trespassing is illegal because you tried to leave and were not allowed to. Also it'll lead to a nice law suit to make it so you don't have to work for awhile. ;)

I'll note that if they are law enforcement officers, in some circumstances they can detain and then arrest you if you are trespassing. In my state, if I am inside a house without permission (under any circumstances), or otherwise took unusual effort to enter (climbed a fence) or went past NO TRESPASS signs, then I am trespassing and could be arrested right there. But that requires them to be police officers...which is rare. These days any monkey can get a security certification and be hired. And in most cases, even an arrest for simple trespass won't lead to a ticket. If you don't know what detention vs. arrest is, read up and figure out local laws so you know what you're risking.

| | | Thanks for the replies! We're scouting Thursday, so we'll gather more info then. I'm 90% sure they're private security though, and should therefore have no legal authority to make an arrest. We'll have to leave if we're caught, but that should be worst case scenario. Anyways, according to New York State law, there's very little they can do to us under these circumstances as long as we don't damage anything or carry weapons. We WILL leave if they catch us. It's just that hopefully we'll have some pics when/if they do. Edit: Also probably worth mentioning we're all minors, so... [last edit 1/24/2011 10:33 PM by DescentOnARope - edited 1 times]

As mentioned though, some private security firms employ off-duty cops... maybe find out what company they are and do some digging.

| | | I would go right up to them, camera in hand, and ask if you could take pictures of the outside. Tell them it's for a photography class. Or, as my son did a couple years ago, for the photography merit badge for Boy Scouts. (Yes, he did abandonments for his photo merit badge project) Talking to them directly, even if they say no, will get you an idea of what they're like, if they're gung-ho, lazy, etc. Heck, they might even let you in.

| | | You don't specify your sex, so I'm just going to tell you what I do (as a male); Rush towards security, holding my dick in one hand and having an uncooked chicken carcass in the other. Seriously, you've no idea how quickly someone will back away from you when you do that. That guard isn't even going to want to be in the same CITY as you, let alone up close and personal. /Top tip. If you're female, well I'm not sure, but probably using your breasts could work on a male guard? Chris...
We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit. |
