That has to be one of the best locations ever. The sheer size of that place, it was a city. Good job, I hope to see more pictures soon. Did you actually go there?

No. I actually came across a mention of it on someone's blog, and did a little further digging from there. When I read the story and saw the photos, I just had to post it here.

Check the main page, there is an url there that has links to about 200 more photos, taken by someone else than the original photographer.

Excellent gallery of over 200 photos can be seen at:

Incredible location. I find this huge place more appealing than the Chernobyl towns because people left the island, not just dying on the spot. Maybe some day if I win the lottery I'll charter a boat for us all to go. (actually win big not like the piddley $10 I won last month)

There are moves afoot to make this a world heritage site... whether that will trash the site from our perspective is another matter.

The only living things left on the island were the stray cats that could not be captured. Unfortunately, after the garbage was all eaten, they starved to death for there was no other life on the island, not even plants that could be eaten.

You know I have images of all the cats gone.......with just ONE big fat cat left.

Chris...

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

I imagine that the first problem is getting there; you either have to have a good boat, or know someone with one. I suspect that anyone trespassing on the island is potentially subject to arrest. One does not wish to deal with the Japanese police as a suspect--I understand they can be rather nasty, particularly towards foreigners. (I've heard that foreigners overstaying their visas by less than 24 hours have been thrown in jail, and when released are escorted to the aircraft in handcuffs, their passports stamped with 'expelled from Japan' stamped on them.)

I could probably get ahold of one of those drug dealer boats, the fast ones that are ocean-going, escape in to international waters before they catch you. The water looks as smooth as glass, you could probably fly a seaplane out there.

The only fly in that particular ointment is that this island is not that far from Nagasaki harbour, which places it squarely in Japanese territorial waters.

Another thing to be aware of if you are planning a trip:

In Nagasaki - they like bukkake.

I really doubt they keep tons of watch on it (Japanese Authorities). I figure if you can get out there, do it. I would for sure.

My guess is that they probably dont keep any watch on it either, because for one, its an Island out in the middle of nowhere, 2, If its that far of shore, then whats the point of worrying about it. Have you checked it out recently? It might be demolished, could be something else there, Japan needs all the land it can get.

Did i read somewhere that they actually mined something from the reef? If they did, then this place is a tribute to the ingenuity of the Japanese people. They can be quite resourceful when the situation calls for it.

They mined millions of tons of coal from the island in the past. Definitely an example of Japanese resourcefulness. Not to mention courage (who'd go down in a mine shaft on a tiny island surrounded by water...one word - floods).

I agree with everyone else - this place is without doubt one of the most fascinating UE locations I can think of. The B&W photography is superb, quite a pleasure to check out.
