CSOs, storm drains, blah im confused.

My city has five outfalls that empty into the river bordering it. They are all CSOs. There are also 3 treatment plants up against the river. But I'm confused... do CSO outfalls ever split off into separated storm drains and sewers drains? Does that happen at the treatment plants?

Also, i don't think i really understand what a CSO is in the first place. The definition i have in my head: It's a storm drain outfall, except when the treatment plant has too much crap to clean at one time. Then it's also an untreated crap outfall.

Thanks

It isn't so much that the treatment plant is overloaded (although this certainly can be the case) as the combined trunk sewer system is overloaded, typically during rain events. This may be because the trunk system is built to the capacity of the treatment plant (which is not large enough to handle storm events), because the trunk system is built to an insufficient capacity, or some combination of the two.

CSOs are often storm sewers with overflow structures inside of them that allow combined sewage to pass from the trunk sewer system into the storm sewer during storms. They may also be dedicated tunnels with little or no water in them except during overflows.

Sometimes you can reach the combined sewer from the CSO tunnel, other times it is inaccessible either because it comes in too high with no ladders, or because it comes in through some kind of separate chamber and then through a very small pipe into the overflow.

The outfall i'd go in has this fenced in area with a bunch of pipes and metal floor panels not far from it. It's got a blinky red light thing too, but it's not on. Might that have something to do with the overflow?
What do you mean by trunk system?

The outfall also has a really low water level... it's even with the river; there's actually a slow current going inside it. Does that mean it's a "dedicated outfall" like you described?

And since it's mainly a storm drain, i don't really have to worry about the big health warning sign pasted on the entrance (unless i'm rolling around in the water)?

If you go in on a "clean day" you'll know where the poop comes from!

Sometimes there are side pipes that carry sewage that connect into the drain and they smell like shit.

Sometimes there are secondary channels inside them or big "locks": Gigantic overflow gates that only open during intense flooding.

during a clean day the poop will stay on one side and stormwater on the other:

| |
| |
| - |
|~~~~~~~~| DRAIN |
|~~POOP~~|mwmwmwmwmwmmwmmw|
|~~~~~~~~|mwmwmwmwmmwmwmwm|
|-------------------------|

during a dirty day the poop will overflow into the drain side:

|wmwmwmwmmwwmwmw~~~~DRAIN~wm|
|~~wmww~~~~mwmwwmm~~~wmwm~mw|
|~~wmw~~~~-wmwwm~mwm~~~wmwwm|
|~~wm~ ~~~|~~~~~~mw~m~wmwwwm|
|~~~POOP~~|~w~~ww~m~~wm~mwmm|
|~~~~~~~~~|~~~mww~~wmwmwmwmw|
|-------------- ------------|

^ actually I reversed that ... the water overflows and mixes with the poop!

Your immune system gets crazy strong by going in places like stormdrains and sewars.

It's possible the drain redirects a small river, or never goes dry, many I've seen never go dry except in extreme drought conditions.

Blinky-red light? Probably.

Only one way to find out!
(CSO's aren't that bad.)

So if my city runs solely on CSOs, there's no way i'm avoiding the poop?

Edit: i'm guessing blinky red light is going to tell me if it's a clean of dirty day?

There won't be much on a clean day; only when it rains heavily and floods.

Expect to see "gross" remnants of previous shitstorms though: tampons, condoms, and w/e else people flush.

It's really not worse than the things you find in most abandonments.

Plus in drains all the communicable viruses are long dead outside their human hosts and the presence of all the bacteria should boost your immune system.

Cso often had not much poop. Sanitary sewer is fowl, but cso is ok. Avoid prime flush times like the 4-6 get home and dump rush.

Alright, thanks everyone. All that was very helpful.
Feel free to give anything else that might help me not suck at draining.

lol dump rush

Bring a headlamp. It's rad to have both hands free.
More than two flashlights. And enough batteries.
Gloves help with concrete. But they fall apart when they get wet.
Wear decent shoes. Maybe boots. You'll be on slippery things at some point.
Bring water. Draining is thirsty.
Small bag. If you're in a tight tunnel you'll be glad. Leave the spare shoes in your car.

ANTIBTDI*. This isn't as crazy as that usually calls for, but it's true.

Ain't nothin' to it but to do it
