That would mean every time you switch systems, your read states would be erased. For those of us who use at least 4 systems on a daily basis, that would be awful.

Bah- good point. I'm trying to do it anyway, since I browse UER almost exclusively from my laptop, but you're right- it wouldn't be a good global solution.

Yes, the 'mark read' button no longer seems to work.

I might be willing to take a crack at this - what language are you using for codebehind in your asp? I'm OK with VB and pretty good with C#. I would also agree that with every page view making several real-time db requests that there is probably no way to scale up your site - even adding a second server would provide only a modest increase in responsiveness.

After the way you attack a guy who's just been trying to provide a home for people to talk about something they enjoy doing (effectively at a loss, if you monetize the thousands of hours Av's spent coding for UER - and don't let anyone fool you - 99% of this site, if not 100%, is totally custom-built)... I wouldn't trust you with 1 measly byte of code on here.

I continue to find it astounding how some of you shit on Av anytime he does something around here - no wonder he's been close to turning it off a few times.

Astounding.

PS the advanced read states suck (imo). I'm glad for the change.

I'm going to respond to specific comments:

...

You can find all sorts of interesting statistics about UER at www.uer.ca/forum_stats.asp . But suffice to say that less than 0.1% of UER's current members are premium members. I highly doubt this initiative will bring in lots of money, but if it does, it might be enough to buy a new server. The monthly "donation drive", after all, only covers the hosting costs. I recently had to buy a new power supply for the server ($300) and that money came out of my pocket.

...

Thanks for your honest comments, everyone. So far, the best idea I've heard is adding more value to Premium Membership by reducing the cost to time ratio. So the question I put to Kowalski, ETMJ, Ian, et. al, is: Since $5 a month is too steep, what would you consider fair and reasonable?

Thanks,
-av

Well, how about a solution to the problem that does not involve charging people at all for advanced readstates? I looked at the link you provided for the stats - some fascinating stuff on there btw - and noted the following:

Number of registered users: 37079
Number of active users (seen in last 30 days): 2983

So here's a solution that doesn't involve charging people - once a month or so, have the database remove entries for all users not active within the previous month. That cuts the number of DB entries needed down to less than 10% based on these statistics. Surely if this hasn't been a huge issue up until recently, then a DB 1/10 the size of the current setup will not be problematic at all. 1/10 the resources would be consumed. When a legacy member actually re-logs in, the DB could create a fresh entry for them. I would much prefer to risk losing my readstates if I haven't bothered to login for a month over losing them entirely because I don't feel like paying for them.

If the issue really is simply the amount of resources consumed, and the idea behind charging for membership was to cut down on the number of members consuming resources, then we can achieve the same goal without charging members and everybody is happy!

$5.00 is not even a pack of healthy cigarettes, not even an elegant evening of dining at McDonalds, not even enough gas to get you out of the city, not even a six-pack of beer.

The $5.00 doesn't even need to be paid monthly, it can be whenever you want to.

The real problem is that people are just cheap. Cut off the forums to all but paid members and AV would soon be living on a cruise ship with 24/7 servants at his call.

TL/DR = just pay up.

Hiya,

I haven't really looked at the HTML5 spec (and the related specs), but I understand there's supposed to be local datastores as part of it.

The problem isn't really storing the data, it is compiling it and accessing it very quickly. Even if I could store all of the readstates locally, compiling them extremely quickly for all threads in all sections into a single coloured button would be difficult.

Yes, the 'mark read' button no longer seems to work.

Certain modes don't have an applicable mark read anymore, such as the Mode 3.

So here's a solution that doesn't involve charging people - once a month or so, have the database remove entries for all users not active within the previous month.

I actually already do this. It is still too much data to use properly.

Show me again where I "attacked" Av other than saying that I think that the initial rates suggested are a money grab? And in any case, Av would almost certainly be reviewing any code changes before putting them live.
And you're another fool discounting the value of all of the posts that people have put in. The time taken to code the board and host things is valuable, certainly, but so are the contributions that thousands of people have made over time.
In any case, you could also look at my offer to help as me offering to pay with time instead of cash - and I've given a number of helpful suggestions, in any case. A decent portion of my day job involves web scalability and I'm actually pretty good with C#.

I continue to find it astounding how some of you shit on Av anytime he does something around here - no wonder he's been close to turning it off a few times.

People don't "shit on Av" any time he does anything, but we will certainly object to suddenly being charged for a formerly free option which removes a lot of usability.

You always had the option to turn them off, zippy.

Good point- I keep thinking in terms of the way I use this site (primarily from the 'new posts' page). Considering it from the main forum, you'd have to do a recursive check through the forum categories to compute this client-side. You could make it manageable by only worrying about the first N posts in any given category, but that'd still be less than the current feature-set.

Seems to me that this thread has been conducive to some effective discussion between Av and users of this board. And I think it's admirable that Av is taking the time to discuss and consider the options users are proposing.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems the people attempting to cause shit in this thread are a couple mods trying to justify to everyone the decisions Av has made. Av himself is doing a great job explaining the changes and doing so in a calm and thorough manner.

Anyways.... Thank you, Av, for listening to the users and considering possible changes.

As much as I like the old readstates, I'm not going to pay $60 per year for them... that's what I pay for my website already. Value wise, readstates != website.

Now, if the price point was dropped ($30 per year and charged once/$15 per six months charged twice a year), then I'd happily pay to have my readstates back. Especially since I don't particularly care for the other Premium Account options (hence why I haven't used Premium since I tried it)... it's just the readstates I'd want.

Also, I echo Brind... readstates are broken in basic mode right now and not updating as they should. I have forums reporting nothing when I first log in, but I can clearly see that someone else has posted in it since the last thing I viewed on UER.

Mode 2 seems to be the only mode where the read-states kind of work. The only problem is again, the 'mark read' button. When in a sub-forum, when one clicks the 'mark read' button, it ends up wiping every other sub-forum of all read-states, as well.. which is slightly annoying.

Yeah. Unfortunately, the new system has only one level of granulation, for the entire forum. There is no category-level granulity.

OK, I've created a new pricing structure to reward people who make a larger donation:

  • Donation of $5 - 30 days of Premium Membership
  • Donation of $10 - 90 days (three months) of Premium Membership
  • Donation of $15 - 180 days (six months) of Premium Membership
  • Donation of $25 - 365 days (1 year) of Premium Membership

I'll be updating the donation page and putting new subscription options for the new intervals. I think these prices are fair and offer a better incentive to make a larger donation.

Nice. As soon as I get bored of trying to do a client-side read-state, I'll probably get a year's worth- $25 is a lot more attractive for a college budget.

I fear this'll get lost in the noise, but like many other 1-in-12 males, I'm pretty red/green colour-blind... these new 'leaves' (sprouts?) with a tiny coloured red/green dot is almost invisible to me.

Colourblindness isn't just the inability to distinguish between those colours, but often means an overall insensitivity to colours in general.

ie: if it's small, moving or faint, I can't tell the difference.

The new icons look cute & all, but they're really non-functional for someone like me. (That said, I kinda had a bit problem with the old dots too, so I always go by timestamps, but these sprouts are just something else.)

New icons are part of the Christmas theme - they're actually unrelated to this change.

this is pretty much everything i was going to say.

i miss my old readstates, and i'm broke (woooo university). what cash i do have i'd frankly rather put in my gas tank so i can GO EXPLORE THINGS (since everything really good in colorado is at least an hour's drive away).

also i just noticed that it reset all my readstates in the DB. that's...really annoying. now i've no idea what i've checked out and what i haven't!

Readstates are still working for me but I can't differentiate any of them on mobile version on my Blackberry. Is that because of Santa? *shakes fist at Santa*

edit: also, not sure if the corporate edition ever showed icons for readstates but it's not doing so now.
