Asbestos...

Well, I was recently clambering about on some roofs around the downtown area of my city. I noticed a bunch of white feathery stuff clinging to my clothes after laying down on a patch of the roof that had them exposed. I did some research, and found out that it's probably asbestos. great.

The infernal stuff quickly spread to every article of clothing I was wearing, and it still itches when I wear them. Is there any way to get them out?

Also, should I be worrying about my health? We weren't up there for an extended period of time, and I felt fine afterward...but I don't think that proves anything.

Please use the search feature before starting a new thread.

Here are just a few that I found using the search feature just typing in the word asbestos. You may have to do a little digging within the archived post, but the information is there. Good luck and I hope these threads can get you started.

One thing I might add is that after exploring wash the clothes you were wearing by themselves and rinse them twice. Also leave the shoes you wore outside for a day or two.

Asbestos requires occupational exposure. That is, you have to be crinkling it in your hands in enclosed spaces for about eight hours a day for a few decades for it to cause trouble.

Mold will get you on the first trip, but asbestos won't cause a problem with explorational exposure. Although you ought to avoid bringing it home with you, because the damn stuff is itchy.

AnApple, Asbestos can cause lung cancer and Asbestosis without prolonged exposure. Yes, longer exposure increases your risk, but any exposure comes with the chance.

Maybe you laid down in fiber glass?
My many encounters with asbestos has never left me itchy.

My thoughts as well. Fiberglass is definitely "feathery," as the original post describes.

Fiberglass is what I thought too, I laid down in some of it on the roof of something not to long ago and it had the same effect.

One thing that I've found (sort of) works on fiberglass itching the skin is to take a cold shower as soon as possible after exposure. A warm or hot shower will open the pores and is libel to make the sensation worse.

Going to go with fiberglass here as well. Been exposed to asbestos, and as mentioned before, have never felt itchy afterwards. Can't say the same for fiberglass.

We learned in our HazMat class that modern fiberglass insulation is as damaging to ur lungs as asbestos. It has the same effect, the fiber stick in and are not exhaled. They then cause micro-scaring. That is what eventually leeds to problems.

It would make sense that it would be Fiberglass. It's just laying in clumps on the roof there in the middle of the busiest part of town, so I'm putting two and two together now...It must have been fiberglass.

I'm still looking into getting a respirator though. Micro-cuts in the lungs doesn't sound like a fun way to go.

Asbestos would be in things not necessarily looking like insulation. It can be in ceiling tiles, floor tiles, wall coverings, just about anywhere. Many buildings prior to the late 60's/early 70's had asbestos in them. The white to light yellow cottony looking stuff would definitely be fiberglass.

Merely entering buildings that have asbestos in them isn't too much of an issue. Just do not stir up dust and disturb things. If it's not in the air, and you're not eating everything in sight, you are generally fine.

I just wanted to clarify that short term or one time exposure will not result in cancer (mesothelioma) or asbestosis. In order for these two diseases to manifest the level of asbestos in the body needs to reach a certain level. So... Ii guess it is theoretically possible if you just sat and huffed this stuff for like 8 hours straight, but I don't think that's an issue.

Now... that doesn't mean you should go around and inhale it or not avoid it. That would be stupid. It is still very bad to inhale and will still cause you health problems. The micro fibers reach the soft tissue in your lungs, usually at an aveolar level and attack it. It causes damage that is not always reversible. But if you accidentally stir some up, just get out of there and breath some fresh air. Rinse your mouth and throat out with clean water. Ultimately just wear at least some sort of respirator if you think there is a risk.

Its fiberglass. Duct tape or similar stickeyness will remove the micro fibers of glass out of your skin.

In all seriousness do you think one of those lint rollers would work? You know, with the "tape" wheel? If so it would seem like the easiest way.

Gorilla brand duct tape. It'll take off the fibers, hair, three layers of skin, everything. Just make sure you have a friend there to yank it off fast for you.

and as stated I never said you will get it with brief exposure, but it is possible.

You're right... it is possible... I just wanted to make sure everyone was aware that even those odds are really really small and that if you accidentally kick up a cloud of dust or find somewhere with asbestos you don't need to go write a will and settle your affairs. I read the link you posted and the first or second paragraph of that section even says that we all are exposed to asbestos over the course of our lives and most people never have symptoms. The other thing is that it is hard to pin these symptoms on asbestos only, because of the other contaminants that are undoubtedly present as well.
