Exploring with minors.

What is the consensus with exploring with minors and taking them to dangerous locations and engaging in trespassing (on federal property in this case). The person/people in question are not full members.

I started exploring with 20 somethings when I was 14. It really comes down to the character and credibility of the minors in question. If you don't feel entirely comfortable taking them with you, that's your answer right there.

Don't let them get caught. Be prepared to give yourself up to authorities while they sneak out the back. Trespassing is less damning than risk of endangerment.

If you get busted well they were there when you got there and you don't know each other.

I have before and will again, he's (family). I've never taken him to a place that I've felt unsafe, or not familiar with, if it was unsafe in places.
I always said, if we ever see patrol/security coming, you know the way out, DON'T wait for me. Get your ass beyond the fences ASAP and keep going. Then call someone you trust to bring you home. I'll take the rap.
I've already got a record. You don't need one.
He is a safe/cautious person who I can trust and that is why I have taken him to a decent amount of places.
Plus he truly friggin loves it as much as I do.
Safety as usual has to be the focus point.
Fuck getting a cool pic if there is any question about your safety being compromised.
(at times I do not follow my own advice on that previous statement, but with him I do.)

I've explored w/ a non-FM minor from here before. My advice is do something low-key and get a feel for them before you go balls out, but that's true of most everyone. Unless arrest is 100% certain (and there are a few sites that would be worth it) don't let age issue bother you.

I've taken my 14 year old sister out before... But I, too, told her to run and not look back or wait for me. If you trust them, bring them along. Better they go with you and learn than go by themselves or with other inexperienced people.

Being a minor, I've founded my own group of responsible explorers in my age range.

We don't like the idea of putting someone else into an even more legally risky situation, so we keep to ourselves.

Depends very much on the minors and the location. Me and my farm cousins went a few places before ANY of us were 'of age'. But they knew plenty about potential hazards - dangerous farm equipment, big livestock and other sundry dangers have a way of teaching one to look out & be careful.

The two things I would definitely advise against are going anywhere with unpredictable hazards (ie; drains) and getting caught by LEO's. Seriously. The courts will nail you to a wall for endangering a minor, which in our pampered age means anything much more than letting them cross the street.

It's all just a trust thing. If you can trust them to stick to whatever plan you make, then it's all cool. If not, no go. I've got friends still in high school that I go urbex with and they're solid. Overall, I'd say age has much less to do with it than common sense. I don't care if you're 50, if you kick in doors and start acting stupid then we will not be going together.

Farm cousins, at least in my experience, are a lot more savvy about everything from navigation to danger-spotting. It's just their upbringing.

If you grow up out where landmarks are scarce, cell phones can't get a signal and it's 100 miles across dirt & gravel roads to the nearest town, you have some serious incentive to learn the fine art of not getting lost. When the animals you interact with daily outweighs you by several hundred pounds, knowing to 'read' animal emotions is a must to not get kicked or bit or gored. (think angry guard dogs are dangerous? try a bull with a bad temper!)

Safe firearms/explosives handling, what not to light a fire with (diesel fuel is OK, regular gasoline is a no-no), wild animal tracking, weather prediction...I could go on, but I think you get the point.

i was going to say exploring with miners is necessary if you are exploring the mine that they work or worked in.

I've never explored with minors but if that was the case I would probably not. If its an easy, open location I might but for me it's really not worth those other pesky charges.

We were here...and it was glorious.

I avoided taking my son with me until he turned 18 because I was worried about "contributing to the delinquency of a minor," not that he needs my help.

Depends on the person. I also think if you're 18 exploring with a 16 year old it's not gonna be as big a deal as if you were 40.

If the person is family and the site is relatively safe, then I'd risk it. However, if the site is very dangerous or the person is not family, I would not do it.

And if the person has proven to be an idiot in the past, I won't take them with me at all! Last thing I need is having the site wrecked or getting busted.

Hm, come to think about it, this pretty applies whether the person is a minor or not.

Gone for a while. Be back when I'm back.

I probably wouldn't.

Trespassing isn't particularly serious, but bringing a minor may add reckless endangerment if you get caught and a prosecutor wants to make an example out of you.

It's not like camping or hiking or climbing where there are experts or courses or books out there that can demonstrate that you were careful in case a minor gets hurt.

So yeah, no, just too much risk for me.

Gravity, it's not just a good idea, it's the law.
