Climbing cranes

Last night I had a few beers and found a crane that was accessible without too much trespassing. I made it a little less than halfway up, but didn't come prepared, it seemed too early out and thus too busy, and I was due to go home and sleep, not climb ladders.

I'll attach some pics of it via the newb-loader, so you get an idea what I'm talking about.

Obviously it helps to carry a bag of some kind. I'm probably going to go with a backpack, because a camera bag seems like it would hinder climbing. I don't think I need a flashlight, because the crane is right next to a major fashion district that'll be lit up at least until 4am.

What other things should I know? What sorts of things do you take on a crane climb?

If it has caged ladders you might find a backpack hinders your climbing, I'd recommend a satchel bag or putting the backpack on your chest.

Also don't forget the beer!

Yeah, it is caged. I'll see what I can find that wouldn't go on my back, side.

Also, no, the beer would not be forgotten.

Just be careful and have fun.

Some local cranes we climbed in the harbor area had rungs that were not only wet, but covered in seagull shit.....did up and down while holding a point and shoot in one hand......A pouch would have been a big help, a backpack would have been a little tougher.

You can see a million miles tonite, but you can't get very far.

Watch out for grease. It varies crane to crane, but it's always a bitch to get out if you get it on your clothes. Half the time I climb a crane, I end up with a small spot of grease on an elbow and then it magically spreads to every article of clothing I'm wearing.

If it's cold and the cab is unlocked, you can hang out in there to warm up for a bit. Just don't move the crane if it's on. =)

/recommends dark blue outfit.

Bring a vastly different colored shirt (bright fucking yellow for example) and if anyone sees you and you have to end up running for it a quick duck into an alleyway and change of clothing ought to throw them off your tracks.

You're right, you won't need a light.

Gloves for the way down (For some reason I tear the sh)t out of my palms coming back down metal ladders).

Harness+quickdraw if you want to go out the arm (and why wouldn't you?)?

Another beer for the top? Electrical tape to 100% keep you from firing your flash?

A bottle of water. I always forget this one.

Great weather so I'll probably try again tonight. Last time was around 10 or 11 and it was deserted (I checked very thoroughly for security before approaching the crane), so I figure around 2 or 3 it'll be even safer. There should still be a lot of activity below me in the markets, but I doubt they'll be looking up, or care if they do see anyone.

1:21am in Connecticut right now, 2:21pm over here. I meant 10 or 11pm and 2 or 3am. So I'll set out a healthy distance past midnight tonight. Your time, maybe around noon.

The first crane I WAS going to climb, fell over the day before...

...not too reassuring, but amazingly the guy inside survived with no major injuries.

make sure you have an idea of the site's work schedule. maybe scope it out the night before or something. I was making my way through a construction site towards a crane one time just before 2am. just before I made it the last bit to the crane, I heard a truck beeping(reversing) and noticed workers start to flood onto the site to begin their shift. I ducked into a dark spot as the crane operator walked right past me and up the crane. If had gotten there a couple minutes earlier i wouldve been stuck on the crane with the operator below me.

Good advice!
Crane grease has ruined more than one of my nice sweatshirts, and a good jacket :\
the shit seems to come out of nowhere, and itll NEVER wash out.
