| | Jed Johnson Tower < on 10/9/2010 11:05 PM >
| | | I went hiking with my boyfriend and his friend today. We wanted to find this tower, but we didn't think we could get into it. We were wrong!

| | | Great pix! Judging from the dates, looks like it's been abandoned a while. Odd that the top walls are made to look like stone. Is the entire structure built that way?

It's at the Wildlife Refuge in Lawton. I've gone there a lot, but never got to see the tower up close. And we actually went to Turner Falls a few weeks ago and checked out the castle there! And the view is nice! When we go back later this month I'll try for a panoramic at the top.

| | | I've seen it there, but some ghost websites claim it's haunted. It's a strange building though, old looking outside and new(er) looking inside.

| | | Nice tower. I wonder how old it is considering the outside is made of bricks. Nice find!

| | | Since when did Oklahoma get mountains? Cool little place, though. Any idea what it was for when they built it?

Haha, I was only mostly kidding. I've got family in Stillwater, so when I think of Oklahoma, I think of flatness. Having now perused an elevation map, I admit there are quite a few lumps here and there- you have my apologies!

I've Googled the hell out of this, and even looked at my old Oklahoma History textbooks, and have found nothing. The tower has no name, I just call it Jed Johnson tower because it's on Jed Johnson lake. I asked a friend who knows the area, and he said he was told it was either a forward observation of Fort Sill or a fire watch tower. He said he would bring me a more solid answer, and I told him good luck. But if he finds anything out I'll let you guys know!

| | | It really is a nice place! And as an update, we went back today and the entrance has been sealed with more rocks, and they are huge. I'm just happy we got there when we did!

That's what I thought. Made me feel kinda bad. But they had to know people were going in there with all the graffiti. There was even a printer in there someone had gone Office Space on.

Fuck printers! Yeah, putting sites up on forums can certainly have some bad ramifications... Though there are of course good things that can come from posting locations.
