K-x I assume? Pentax is the best value for the money, hands down. If HD video is not very important to you, go with an older K-# model, and pick up some nice lenses and equipment. The K100d is an excellent camera, I've used it since it was released and have never had any problems, even after 15k images taken with it.

Whoever said that Pentax doesn't have a wide variety of lenses, you are mistaken. The K mount has a huge selection of lenses from the past 40 years, and are almost all compatible with the Pentax DSLRs. Ive used lenses from my old k1000 and zx-l with it and it works perfectly.

Yep it's the k-x i was talking about. I would like to have hd video but it's not a must have. Yeah the K mount has a ton of lenses available and you can find older lenses for cheap....I'm just comparing it to the d90 and i don't see how it's worth it for me to spend more for the d90 when the kx has everything and more that i need and it's had great reviews from everywhere.

I'm still looking around though.

With the exception of the speed difference the d90 has the same "guts" as the d300 from Nikon. i kicked myself for not waiting and buying something better (started with the d60) ((which is the same as the d3000)) your not necessarily bankrupting yourself, and most camera stores have deals running on them on almost every major holiday at this point. save your penny's and buy something that's gonna give you room to grow! but picking up a d70s or a d80 is usually a good choice too, you can pick them up for 300-400 bucks used. and the function with older non afs lenses, which in turn gives you the ability to get older, but super good glass, for a cheaper price ala. used. one of the major stopping points with the rebel line and the thousand line from Nikon is the lack of a internal focusing motor which forces you to buy the newer style of lens. sony allows you to use Minolta lenses and the have zeis but you pay out the nose for it.

if your looking into buying your first SLR, try to stay with something that will keep the cost down and the new slr body's at entry level are there to make you spend way way to much on lenses.

mega-pixels are not as big a deal as everyone claims, i shoot a d300s and my friend shoots with a d70s, over the shoulder at the same time we get equal shots, the only noted improvement at this point is higher iso range.

video- not all its cracked up to be, admittedly i use the video feature on my camera a lot, but mainly only because its there, the auto focus is slow if there at all on all models. and the two cameras the do it most efficiently one being the video SLR as i call it the "7d" and the "5dmk2", canon really is nailing the market when it comes to video. but its slow coming and the tech isn't quite there yet to warrant a purchase based on that.

I'm going to be purchasing my first SLR camera soon and I'm debating on whether I should get a Nikon D3000 or a Canon EOS Rebel XS. They are the same exact price. Does anyone have an suggestions on which one I should get?

Get the Canon.

I firmly believe no Nikon lower than the D90 is worth buying.

I was talking in terms of the new nikons. Obviously older high end cameras are excluded. I would love a D80 personally.

I could have just been more specific and said the D3000 and D 5000 are both shit, or better yet any Nikon that must use the AF-S lenses.

Fair enough. If someone is in the price range for a D3000 or D5000, check out the D40 and D80... You can pick them up for the same price or much less.

Do not pay the same price as a D3000 for a D40. The D3000 is basically an updated D40. Same sensor, more features.

This is incorrect.

D200 (2005) > D80 (2006) > D40x (2007) > D60 (2008) > D3000 (2009). They all use the same aging 10mp CCD sensor.

D100 (2002) > D70/s (2004/5) > D50 (2005) > D40 (2006). They all use the same ancient 6mp CCD sensor.

So I've come to the conclusion without dropping several thousands of dollars into camera equipment, I'm not going to get a drastic improvement in image quality. And the rebelxt feels like a toy compared to my EOS-3 ... I doubt even a 50D won't satisfy my "real camera" lust.

And I have a tendency of breaking things, expensive things.

Well "The best camera is the one in hand" right? And sometimes even the RebelXT is a bit much to be packing with me. So I find myself desiring something prosumer near DSLR but something that offers long exposures.

I'm going to do my younger sister's senior portraits this year and in exchange my parents are going to pay half on a new camera. I'm looking for $300-350 if possible.

Panasonic recently announced the DMC-LX5 which means the LX3 is going to drop in price soon. So I want to know opinions on the LX3 or if there is another alternative that offers similar results "up high at night"

tl;dr:

I want a pro-quality point and shoot for under $350 that offers
manual controls [manual+aperture priority are all I use]
long exposures (30"+)
a wide angle lens (<28mm)
Good night images.

is the LX3 the best I can find for sub 350? Or are there other cameras I should look into?

I'm far from an expert, but I can say this. I owned a Panasonic TZ5 before my Canon T1i. The Panasonic was nice. VERY nice. But, it can't hold a candle to the Canon. No way.

Plus, I was much more delicate with the P&S because it's just more fragile. I feel a lot more confident with my DSLR than I ever did with a point and shoot. Sure, it's bigger and bulkier, but it's more solid.

I really didn't want the T1i when I first grabbed it. It felt VERY cheap to me. However, after putting a nicer lens on it and using it for awhile, I like it, a LOT. It won't feel cheap after awhile. It's well built, but light.

The TZ5 isn't comparable to the LX3. TZ5 doesn't have any manual modes and the more you stretch the zoom length of a lens the worse the image resultant quality, it's why prime lenses will always exceed zoom lenses. Pickup a EOS-3 or 5DmkII and shoot for a while then go back to the t1i, you'll see the difference.

I want to be able to strap a tripod to my back, zip the PnS in my pocket, and scale the outside of a building from heights between broken bones and holyshitdeath.

I looked into the Ricoh GX100 (299 @ amazon), which offers similar specs and offers the longest exposure I've seen yet of any camera, 180".

But I feel that the Ricoh would take probably 5-6 minutes to take a 3 minute exposure and I feel the better low-light performance on the LX3 would make up for it.
I feel
The Ricoh GX100 @ f/5.6 180" ISO 100
vs
The Panasonic LX3 @ f/5 60" ISO 400
...
The higher ISO LX3 would still win the image shootout. And I rarely use bulb mode on my Rebel as it is so I feel the 60" of the LX3 would be more than sufficient.

I've used a 5dMKII. it's nice, but not really comparable to anything we're talking about here. And I thought the LX3 was closer to the TZ5, I didn't realize they were so different.

Alright, I stand corrected on my specifications, but that just drastically reinforces my point of 'don't pay D3000 prices for a used D40'.

I have to agree, especially when one can get one used for under $200 now.

Alright now you're mixing stories. First you said the D3000 and D5000 are "both shit". Now you're saying that the D50, that is MORE obsolete than the 'shitty' D3000, is 'still one hell of a camera'. I would think that if you believed the D3000 and D5000 are both shit, then you wouldn't even want to touch a D50.

Now if we're talking FOR THE PRICE, a D50 or similar outdated camera would be an excellent jumping-on point to see if you're interested in photography, without investing a small relative fortune on a new entrylevel camera. But saying two new cameras are shit then coming back and saying an even more obsolete camera is 'one hell of a camera' is, well... Shit.

They're "shit" because they don't have a built-in AF motor. The D50 has one, therefore it is not "shit."
