Pick your poison. Easier to be seen, or more likely to be in more trouble. You could predawn and get the best of both worlds.

| | | I usually explore buildings during the day so that I can see them/ take pictures. Construction sites, towers, cranes, steam tunnels etc usually have to be done at night because of visibility. It usually doesn't matter much with drains.

predawn is a good idea, but as I don't have my own car (I hate you tuition) it's hard for me to get transport to a location that early in the morning. In general I tend to stick with late night though, as i'm more concerned with exploring the location than photography, and the night ambiance can't be beat. easy to hear people coming too

| | | I mostly explore in the daytime, just easier to take photos which is why I'm there, but most of the places I've been to are usually in a good spot that I don't worry about getting busted and whatnot. I like the pre-dawn idea, except I'm not a early riser. haha. Edit: I prefer evening as my preferred time frame to go out. [last edit 7/28/2010 7:17 PM by Urban-Explorer - edited 1 times]

What else do you have to do Friday night than sleep on premises, then wake up early and do things? Summer's nice for camping in. Be aware of local hobo populations. Anyway, as long as you are friendly, clean, and polite then you're unlikely to get worse than a trespass ticket. If you aren't seen going in you're likely to be in the clear while inside. If you're going to regularly haunt a place, don't be seen around too often; it can lead to trouble.

| | | Predawn, explore & shoot, leave. Assuming you are there to explore and take photographs, that is. That's the easiest way in my opinion. If you don't or can't do predawn, then early morning is OK too. As long as you are up and in the place before the look-i-loos go to their kitchen windows, walk their dogs, etc. The only issue with leaving using this method is obvious: you can be seen easily. So, just bear that in mind. I'd rather be seen leaving though, because it's easier to say "well officer, I am sure ol' lady Mildred is very nice, but she must be mistaken. I was never in that building!" if you weren't actually caught inside that building. It all depends on the location though. For example, I know places that are easier explored between 3p-5p due to shift changes in nearby establishments. It's all geographically dependent.

Don't forget to take out your memory cards, before leaving... would suck to have that "evidence" looked at by LE

thanks! I'm not so paranoid to go to quite those lengths, but if I ever do manage to get into a high security or more risky place I will definitely use that

| | | I'm going to have to go with day simply because it's easier to see my way in. Most of my spots require a fair amount of tramping through forest and brush to get there, so I want that daylight to see. Guards are also pretty obvious during the day. While less likely at night, if they are there, you might not see them until they shine that light on you. When the sun is up, I find it hard not to see everything around me. And if you stay low enough to the ground while moving out in the open/sprint between cover, you'll avoid any prying eyes.

| | | I've always found that with security it's a lot easier to talk your way out of it during the day. At night your obviously up to no good and they know that. So I always try and go during the day. Plus it's easier to see random holes in the floor or rusty things sticking out of the ground waiting for you to trip on them.

| | | it seems to be a mix of both for me. which one i do more often is usually based on where i am and what my time frame is for that specific location/city. for interior photos of buildings, daytime is obviously the best choice. but for shots of a skyline, nighttime is where it's at. it's all relative to the situation at hand.

| | | The first time I explore a location, it tends to be at night. Easier to scout around and find a good entry point without being bothered. Also safer to do exterior climbing at night, if that's the only way in. Then, once inside, it's not usually too hard to establish an easier and/or ground floor POE for later daytime use. Plus night time exploring feels more like a "mission". I am lame. I like going on missions. :/

Dude, missions are NOT lame. As for myself, I generally end up going right around sundown, which is cool because it gives me time to scout, find a POE, and figure out any other threats that may be around, and then by the time I do that, it is dark enough that I can get in and be quiet about it and nobody is aware of it.

I see that you're Canadian, which means that the following little snippet of the Criminal Code of Canada might be of interest to you with regard to your question: ------------------------------ Trespassing at night 177. Every one who, without lawful excuse, the proof of which lies on him, loiters or prowls at night on the property of another person near a dwelling-house situated on that property is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction. ------------------------------ I only point this out because regular trespassing is not covered by the federal criminal code, and (in Ontario, at least) is punishable only by a fine of not more than $2000. Summary conviction under the Criminal Code of Canada is roughly analogous to a misdemeanor in the U.S., carrying a maximum penalty of six months in prison and/or a $5000 fine. At the risk of sounding like I'm giving advice, I don't personally believe that any police officer could charge you with trespass at night if you're at an abandoned old factory or something. Further, you probably wouldn't be looking at any prison time or a fine of anywhere near $5000 if you did get caught. In my mind, however, it's worth knowing what the maximum risk is so you can determine the risk vs. reward. For my part, I'm a predawn entry/exit whenever I feel like it kind of guy if there's a better than 50/50 shot of getting caught. EDIT: I consulted my Criminal Code when I got home and found that as of 2009, section 177 (Trespassing at night) is punishable by a maximum $2000 fine, and not $5000 as I saw somewhere online. Legal sentences include: Discharge, suspended sentence, fine alone, fine & probation, prison, prison & probation, prison & fine, intermittent, fine + probation + intermittent, victim surcharge, conditional sentence. Further, the definition of "dwelling-house" means that you really can only be charged with this if the structure in question is either a temporary or permanent residence. This may or may not cover abandoned houses, but will certainly cover any active house or mobile home. Again, the chances of getting charged with this to begin with are probably slim unless you're caught in someone's back yard or something. The chances of conviction are probably even slimmer. Food for thought, anyway. And wow, TL, DR. [last edit 8/11/2010 9:28 PM by hyphen - edited 1 times]
