I can't say much for the D5000 either. I use them at my job (souvenier photos at the zoo) and have to take about 500 pictures a day. The kit lenses Nikon puts on them are crap, there's no DOF preview, and auto focus is kinda slow and sometimes tricky to negotiate. The screen is buggy and when open sometimes it displays sideways for no apparent reason. One thing I will say for the camera is it's very ergonomic. I have no trouble holding this thing with SB-900 flash for 6 hours. They're surviving the wear and tear really good. So far besides the buggy screens (all 6 cameras have this issue) we've had no problem, and they're in 95 degree sweltering heat and sun all day. I'm not sure how they'll do in the winter yet though.

The rebels have much more features, and I think Canon kit lenses are much better than a comparable nikon. My old rebel T2 had a fantastic lens on it, but my Nikon D40x not so much. Rebels arent as comfortable to hold though, and my rebel T2 completely died on me this year. It had a full battery and displayed full battery, but when you click the shutter it errors and says the battery's dead. It was 5 years old, but was very gently used and only had maybe 1000 clicks on the shutter when this happened. So I can't say much for reliability.

You may also want to consider a Sony or Pentax. Both of them make a better DSLR than the D5000. Pentaxes have a much more vast availability of lenses than nikon, and Sony has Zeiss lenses available.

And you're getting this information from.....where, exactly? The last time I checked, Nikon never changed their lens mount and have been using the same F mount for over 50 years. The last time I checked, Nikon wasn't discontinuing every single fucking full-frame lens in their line-up in favor of APS-C only.

Alright well thanks for the info guys....ive heard some bad things about the 3000 online but i wasn't sure how true it all was....

The D5000 is a little more money and from the sounds of it I'll probably stay away from it....the 5000 is like 70 bucks more than the XS and it doesnt have a lens kit so I doubt its worth the extra money.

on second thought, Pentax does have a large total selection of glass, possibly equal to that of Nikon. However, Nikon has the larger variety of current glass.

Alright what about the canon rebel XS w/18-55 IS vs. the Pentax k-x w/18-55 DA L

I'm just using Henry's website as a reference for prices...the XS is 549 and the kx is 629.

The Pentax also does hd video so thats a bonus.

Am I better off buying just a body and buying a different lens? or well the 18-55 be good enough for a first lens?

Thanks guys

You'd be better off with the Pentax SMCP-FA 28-90mm f/3.5-5.6. The reviews I've seen place it higher than the 18-55. I used a near identical canon lens starting out and it's a pretty good zoom range. Good for portraits or close ups.

If autofocus isn't important you can find a range of fantastic lenses in great shape for under $50. I just got a Sigma 35-200 1:3.7 macro along with some other sundries for $10

If you were to go the pentax route you ought pick one of these up. I came across one of these on a thrift store sigma and have used it to great results.

I went and looked at some cameras this morning and I really really like the feel of the pentax....It also has some really nice features to it which put it ahead of the canon imo. I'm liking the fact that it uses AA batteries and it does hd video.

Thanks budda for the great info...If I were to buy just the body its about 70 bucks cheaper than it is with the 18-55 so I might go that route if i can get some better lenses.

I would like to get a macro lens at some point so those used lenses look really nice for the price if I can find some.

There seems to be lots of good reviews on the 28-90 but I can't find too many of them for sale anywhere.

I start a new job on Monday so it'll probably be a couple weeks before I buy anything which gives me lots of time to research everything.

AVOID THE D3000. The thing is garbage. If you have to get an entry-level Nikon, go for the D5000.

Better yet, move up a few rungs and get a D90.

If find that you really enjoy photography after you do purchase your first SLR, you'll definitely wish you had saved up for the better one instead of going for the first thing you could currently afford.

Ask me how I know...

No argument there. I was just trying to work within his price range.

You can always try getting a used D80. I got mine for $450.

I see what your saying but I have to draw the line somewhere I can't just go out and keep buying the most expensive thing I can just because it's slightly better.

All I'm looking for in a camera is something that well do everything that I'm looking to do with it and not make me bankrupt.

I'm reading reviews and the kx is probably the best current camera for me in my price range....the d90 has a few advantages but I don't see it making that much of a difference for me to justify spending twice as much .

But I am still looking into other cameras and I will look into used D80's.

I rather like my D3000. Sure, it's really noisy at higher ISO settings, but I don't mind long exposures. And I don't want to shoot video or really care about live view.

If you think you'll get into photography as a major part of your life (main hobby, possible source of income later) and you decide to go with the Nikon line, I highly recommend you keep saving until you can afford a D90. I'm a Nikon guy, I know a very small amount about Canon's SLRs. Any other cameras or brands, I don't know about AT ALL. If you can't afford the D90 right now and still want to shoot, get a used PnS on Ebay or Craigslist. You can still learn a lot with one until you get an SLR.

I say to go with the D90 if you choose Nikon because it has an autofocus motor in the camera body. Some lenses don't have autofocus motors in the lens body, and require autofocus motors in the camera body instead.

If you really don't think you'll end up buying any lenses that require an autofocus motor in the body (which is absolutely crazy talk considering lenses like the 50mm f/1.8 available for ~$120) and still want to go Nikon, get the D5000. Even if you don't care about video or live view (I fall into that category myself) the D5000 uses the same sensor as the D90, which performs leaps and bounds ahead of the D3000's in low light shooting.

Of course if you decide to go with something other than Nikon, none of my advice is as pertinent...

I havn't ruled anything out yet, If I can get a D90 for a decent price then i'd pick one up. The main reason I want to buy one is just for a hobby, I can't see myself trying to make money in photography but who knows.

I have a decent PnS right now it's a 9MP 4xOptical fuji and it's served me well but i'm ready to upgrade. Ive never been a huge canon guy myself since I had nothing but problems with my canon p&s but that being said I would still look into canons and see what people have to say about them. I was originally looking into the canon XS but the pentax KX blows it out of the water so now thats what I've been looking into.

AFAIK the pentax does have an autofocus motor in the body unlike the D3000 & 5000...So I cant see myself getting the 3000, 5000, or the canon XS....So right now i'm just trying to decide if the 90 is worth the extra money over the KX.

I don't really care about liveview but It would be nice for me to have video and the kx has both and it also uses AA batteries which is a huge plus IMO (Just preference)

Well actually the D90 is only marginally more expensive than the D5000 or whatever you're looking at (the most expensive thing would probably be the D3S or D3X or whatever they call it now) and it has a LOT more features, most of which I'd consider essential (or very highly useful) in UE. Depth of field preview? Available vertical grip/additional battery capability? Uses a remote IR release? Built-in bracketing? I don't have time to look up the specs from each camera but I'll go out on a limb and say the D90 trumps the D5000 in most of those features.

There are additional cameras in Nikon's line that are more expensive than the D90 (ie, D300 and D700) so its kind of like the D90 is at the low end of the "mid-level" cameras. Its really an excellent value for the money.

By the way, I can't rave enough about the vertical grip (on any camera). I find architectural / UE photography frequently lends itself to vertical photos, and the vertical grip makes this a lot easier. And coupled with an L-shaped bracket, mounting the camera vertically to the tripod couldn't be any easier. I'd hate if I couldn't use my vertical grip.

...and you decide to go with the Nikon line, I highly recommend you keep saving until you can afford a D90.

K-x I assume? Pentax is the best value for the money, hands down. If HD video is not very important to you, go with an older K-# model, and pick up some nice lenses and equipment. The K100d is an excellent camera, I've used it since it was released and have never had any problems, even after 15k images taken with it.

Whoever said that Pentax doesn't have a wide variety of lenses, you are mistaken. The K mount has a huge selection of lenses from the past 40 years, and are almost all compatible with the Pentax DSLRs. Ive used lenses from my old k1000 and zx-l with it and it works perfectly.
