I have a EOS-3 film camera, made in 1999 ... and a rebel xt made in 2005.

The 6 year old film camera blows the rebel away, not necessarily a fair comparison but you'd think 6 years of technology would offer an advantage, it doesn't.

Old AF systems suck, and sometimes white balance options are improved (made more accurate?)

Now _that_ is important, the biggest reason I want to upgrade is my stylus 1020 has absolutely no recourse for low light photos. Stars, moonlit interiors, silhouettes against the night sky, even outdoor nighttime is hard with point and click unless its well lit or I don't care about the flash highlighting only the select closest objects.

I'd love to go film, but I don't have the cash to blow on wads of film and development, or the initiative to make my own darkroom.

The EOS-3 was second from top of the line in 1999. Basically where the 5D mk II is in the lineup today. Compare a 1999 rebel to your XT and you'll see the AF is better in the XT.

Yeah, you need a camera with some decent long exposures matey. If you are at all constrained by budget, then have a look at the Canon PowerShot range; many of which have 15 seconds long exposure. Night photography is a lotta fun!

But I paid more for the digital!

Dated AF isn't always crappy and you can get mid range / high end older bodies for cheap on the used market. I'd expect any of the prosumer digital models: 10D, 20D, 30D to have a decent af system (better than rebels at least) and be about the same price as an older rebel. Wish I had known that when camera shopping last year.

Psst the EOS-3 IMHO is more like a 50D than the 5D, semiprofessional/prosumer priced about the same, there wasn't a need for a 5D equivalent in 1999, because film is full frame.

Pentax reveals 40MP DSLR monster, the 645D

Mar. 10, 2010 By: John Brownlee

http://www.geek.co...815534_mwyds-m.jpg

Pentax’s latest medium-format DSLR is an absolute monster. Called the 645D, it packs 40 Megapixel onto its thirty three millimeter by forty four millimeter sensor.

Got that? Forty megapixels. That’s completely ridiculous, even for a DSLR, and usually I’d argue that’s way too many megapixels to take good pictures even with a great camera… by the 64D’s sensor is actually significantly larger than the average 35mm 36 x 24 x 2mm sensor. It might just be able to handle it.

The Pentax 645D is aimed mostly at photographers working within a studio, so most of the features are pretty standard, but there are some interesting ones, like built-in HDR. The Pentax 645D also uses SD cards in a dual-slot configuration over the ubiquitous Compact Flash. There’s also an in-camera HDR mode that will combine three separate images into one.

There’s also some impressive exposure modes to boast of. There’s the usual shutter and aperture-priority modes, but there’s also a sensitivity-priority mode, which automatically adjusts the ISO according to the shutter and aperture settings you pick.

As far as chassis construction is concerned, the Pentax 645D looks a lot like the 645: it’s essentially a black cube with a ergonomic handle, with top and rear screens with a tempered glass covers and a large viewfinder

that covers 89% of the images. The body even has dust reduction. But don’t expect this much camera to come cheap: when it comes out in Japan in May, it’ll start at $10,000.

Alright so I posted in the photo thread, and missed the camera choice thread completely. Goes to show you the last time I was on. Anyways due to my poor connection it either didn't go through or a mod canned it, and didn't send me a handy PM....

I was looking at the Olympus Tough series probably the 14 Mega, and either the 6020 or 8010.

I am either soaking wet, or in a dusty hate filled environment most time, and I want something I can't break. I wont be diving, but I killed my last camera in about 8 months and I would like to have something that survives.

I'm not a camera guy I take terrible pics and don't plan to race for success here, but I might want a little digital video, and photo abilities. When I take a good shot I want it to come out well. Also most of my exploring has been at night and I would like something that kinda can take good pics at night if possible.

My needs are.

1. Waterproof(Don't need past 15/20 feet id think)
2. Dust proof/resistant
3. Break resistant
4. Can take good quality
5. Has video function (although they all seem to these days)
6. Doesn't require a engineer and a slide rule to function.

Is my choice good? Are there better choices? Any comments and complaints about this new camera?

I am kinda camera dumb and this one is sitting on the shelf (8000 version) and I am debating it.

Been thinking of getting one of these myself:
Panasonic DMC TS2
$399 msrp but can be found cheaper.
http://www.digital...anasonic+lumix+ts2

leica lens
up to 60" exposure (double what most other (let alone waterproof) cameras offer)
28-128mm [35 equiv] focal length (I've seen up to 24mm focal lenses but not in waterproof bodies ) which is the same range as a 18-55 on 1.6x crop sensor

the older edition Panasonic DMC TS1 can be bought cheaper but had problems the TS2 mostly corrects.

The olympus tough are gonna be practically useless at night

they only offer up to 4" in night mode

vs the Panasonic dmc ts1\2 which offer up to 60" in night mode.

The only downside to ALL of these cameras are:

no manual mode in ANY tough camera
no RAW (doesn't sound like you'd need it anyways)
no bulb mode (don't know of any except PnS' that offer it except $1000 professional cameras and chdk hacked Canons though even those are limited by sensor)
nor a true 'wide angle' but offers what a kit lens on a dLSR offers.

I wish they offered the Panasonic DMC LX3 in a 'tough body'
the LX3 shoots raw and has a 24mm (35 equiv) wide angle lens
the LX3 also has one of the best lenses available in a PnS.
But the LX3 isn't rugged.

The DMC TS2 is the best 'tough' exploring camera IMO

Back in 2005 I was using a Pentax film p&s that had bulb mode. It was a nice feature to have.

Let me tell you, I have the 1030 SW and Olympus makes some seriously retard-proof cameras. The things that I subjected this puppy to were sadistic before it finally kicked the can (fell off a roof with my camera in my hand and threw it in the air to have it land on the street, STILL WORKS but needs a new cable for the LCD screen). Anyways, the 8010 is probably a good choice, but the 1030 still takes some nice looking pictures if you just want something you can really run through the gauntlet. Only downside is this kind of camera sucks for low light, so everything you take in the dark will be either noisy fuzz or flash-lit. Still worth it for the price though, you can get them refurbished for great deals on ebay.

If you want to check out how the earlier generation 1030 performs, see my thread "Alpins in Cornwall". You'll see what I mean about low light, you can make it work but it really isn't geared to really low light.

Film is different. If you misuse bulb mode on a film camera it'll ruin a roll of film. If you misuse bulb mode on a digital it can murder your sensor ... and most cheapo digital sensors aren't designed to handle bulb mode and superlong exposures.

Hell even the Rebel t2i's chip will overheat in about 1.5 hours if used continuously. you can see 7d vs t2i overheat comparison here.

Hey guys I'm trying to decide between two different cameras...

I could buy a Canon Rebel XT used, with the kit lens 18-55mm and 50mm f/1.8 (with the AF broken), two compact flash cards, and two batteries/charger, camera strap, targus tripod, cables and such for $400

OOOR

The much better Rebel XS refurbed for around $400 with 1 battery/charger, 18-55mm kit lens, cables and such, and strap

This.

The XT has a shitty little screen and chances are it has the old non-IS 18-55mm SHITkit lens with it. The XS has a better, larger screen and will have the MUCH BETTER 18-55mm IS kit lens with it.

While that's true, the newer IS lens is still 'rip your dick off in frustration' class garbage. Soft, glairy, lots of purple / blue fringe haze and way more distortion at wide open than it need have; worst kit lens I've ever got with a camera.

Initially I had no plans to buy a replacement lens for the kit lens which came with the 450d (I used the Nikon kit lens with my D50 till I sold the whole camera, for instance) but within a week I had some new glass on order!

YMMV

It really sounds like you got a bad sample, which isn't surprising as this is a kit lens.

I mean, yeah.. the newer IS version is still garbage in many aspects (mainly in regards to the toystore build quality), but it's significantly sharper than the old non-IS shit lens.

.....But of course, I will NEVER buy another kit lens.

It's perfectly possible matey, yeah - but I'd say that the UK as a whole got a bad batch (again, that's also possible), as everyone on the UK photography boards I was on at the time slated the thing. For nearly a year it was the top most listed lens on ebay.co.uk as people quickly tried to get rid of them!

I just wish I'd went body only from the start and saved £35!

So, opinions: $280 CDN for a 300D + kit lens and bag, worth it?
I think so, comes with all the standard stuff and a starter memory card.
For a first DSLR I'm pretty much just going on value.

That said, I also found a rebel XT w/bag with the same 18-55 kit lens (though the XT comes with the IS lens) for $350... but maybe I should take the 70 bucks difference and put it towards a better lens in the future instead?

Tagging this because I'll be in the market for a new camera soon-ish.

Almost time to upgrade from the shitty P&S I think.
