Drain Gates

My buddy and I have some great storm drain systems to explore but the drains are blocked by giant metal gates. The gates have hinges on the top so they can be opened, but some of these gates are freaking heavy.

We can lift most of them up but what's good way to keep them open? I don't trust my buddy to hold the 400 pound grate for me every time, so we thought of a rock or something. But are there any better methods?

Should we skip the gates and just go through the manholes? Manholes are high key though. Tell me what you guys think.

Car jacks and solid wooden blocks (like 8"x8"x16") or a log. Not that I've used this method since there's not many here but if I were going in flappers like that, that's what I'd probably use. I've also heard of suggestion of a winch hooked to a tree.

Honestly, just get the balls up to do manholes. Much easier, much less hassle.

Otherwise, car jack.

A torch might be heavy and awkward, something like this would be better. Although I would never use it for that, NO NO.

Note the extra blade.

Go to drains with gates like these and it won't be a problem...

Also depending on where you live you could go the manhole route, here in Dallas you'll just get looked at funny. No one really cares, it's like being paranoid on pot, you think everyone knows what you're doing, but the odds are, no one cares.

You could always wear an orange vest and set out some road cones..

Thanks for the feedback guys, I definitely will not try any of those methods ;)

Especially not the torch...

But I'm starting to think manholes are the best way, we just have to find which manhole goes to the tunnel we want and we are having trouble finding the street level access points.

A compass and some math should do the trick though.

Yeah, I've run into this same issue before, just start poppin lids where you think the tunnel goes. And most of the time they are gonna be marked "storm sewer". Just dont look paranoid when your opening manhole lids, dont look around watching for people looking at you. Look like you know what you are doing, most people will just think you're doing some sort of city work, or you're just weird.

I can't tell if that's an optical illusion or like the biggest gate I've ever seen. Is that an infall and are those human sided holes that you could walk right through?

It's the biggest gate you've ever seen. No trickery here.. Water gets too deep it has to be navigated by boat/inflatable dolphins or whatever..

We climb around in dank, dark, sometimes scary drains, which is probably my favorite hobby, and even by those standards I think we're all weird... Maybe socially un-normal would be a more PC way to put it.... MHO Wouldn't have it any other way.
