| | | No, I don't think I've ever heard about that happening to anyone anywhere at any time. The best defence is a good escape.

Nope, never. I have never felt in such an unsafe area that I needed to bring a weapon of any sort, or risk bringing a weapon of any sort and getting caught/arrested. The biggest safety precaution i've taken is to bring another explorer that i'm pretty sure could kick butt if needed. The closest i've come to a weapon is my tripod, which is pretty heavy and if needed makes for good hitting people upside the head, and keeping away dogs that feel like attacking (which i actually have encountered. Stupid people walking their dogs need to keep the vicious ones on a leash!)

| | | I've had to fend off feral dogs before, but I usually pick up something on-site, like a branch or rock. I imagine industrial sites would have old pipes or bars or something to grab if needed. I'd be more worried about being caught with a weapon.

This wasn't a feral dog. it was supposedly a domestic one a lady was walking around the property I had nothing around me to pick up, and it raised it's hackles at me, all I had was my tripod to keep it at a distance while I was trying to walk back to my car. Took the lady two freakin minutes to start running towards where her dog had me cornered.

| | | I stop showering a few days from an explore. Start eating lots of onions & garlic. Then roll in shit n piss for a few minutes, Puke on myself and pull my junk out. Nobody fux with me. Starting off on the right track can help keep you safe.

| | Re: defense <Reply # 9 on 4/24/2010 3:28 PM >
| | | I do not carry anything for defensive purposes and am not really prepared to use violence to defend myself. If it's money they want, I'm more than happy to part ways with the couple of coins I usually have in my pocket. Same with the stuff I carry - I can always buy a new (used) cell phone or flashlight or, in case of more expensive equipment like cameras, get my money back through insurance. No need to get injured or killed over something that can be easily replaced. If I'm threatened with violence, I'll challenge them to a running contest - I doubt someone inhabiting an abandoned building and possibly using drugs can run that fast or far (not that I'm an athletic myself, but...). Of course if it's a non-negotiable opponent I can't outrun, such as a dangerous animal, the last line of defense is the tiny blade in my Leatherman Wave. I try to avoid getting into such situations in which I would need to defend myself by not going alone, not exploring at the same time with Russian metal thieves and avoiding mutant/zombie/vampire-infested areas.

Its true. Ive gone places with him and you can smell him driving down the freeway. The only reason to where gas mask is cuz of him. But I always have a knife on me just cuz you never know what you might need it for. I found an apple at an abandonment one time and cut it open to see if it was still good.

| | | The most i bring are knives. As long as you keep it under the legal length they cant do anything about them being on you. Ive never had to use them for defense but they come in handy for other things =D I make sure i always bring them when i go exploring because honestly, you do never know what could happen that day.

| | | 4 Cell maglite has dual functionality. As does a tripod with a steel head. Never had to resort to violence though. With wild (or domestic dogs) your best defense is throwing rocks. If there are no rock, bend down and pretend to scoop one off the ground and pretend to throw it, they will shy away (not even kidding about this one).
