| | | Draining - walking in muck < on 4/3/2010 10:00 AM >
| | | Me and a friend were walking this drain, water is pretty shallow, about 10-30 cm. The problem wasn't the water but the muck at the bottom, sometimes it was sand which is ok to walk on, but sometimes it became this filthy muck which you can easily sink in, and even loose your boots in. I never got stuck in quicksand but that was the feeling. Eventually we had to stop and go back since we reached an entire part which was this mucky, and we couldn't go on. I guess the muck isn't that deep, only about 10-20 cm, but that's enough to get you stuck. Are there any methods, techniques or gear we can use to keep going through that shit?

| | | How far did you walk through it? When I've run into sand and grit it's near junctions of tunnels or sometimes near the outfall. Basically where ever water might backup temporarily is where the grit and sand will be deposited. But it seemed to disburse in about 100 meters or so. If people walk in single file and use the same holes as the person in front of them it gets a little easier. I know what you mean though. Walking through it is pretty hellish and a good work out. I really can't think of any tricks to get past it besides determination or possibly finding a manhole upstream past the muddy part. Best of luck!

| | | Weather is probably a factor too, especially if you've just had a round of spring rains. I've been in one drain where there was no muck in January, and 40cm of quicksandy drain muck in March; presumably it all came down there from silty creek flow, and if that's the case it should leave by the same way next time it rains.

| | | I'm gonna be doing my first drain in a few weeks..Can't wait. Although after all the rain in the northeast..I unfortunately have to. I would be the lamest explorer ever if I showed up with my headlamp and some swimmies around my arms.

But really, there's tons of drains, one without muck should be close by. Also, depending on the size of the drain you could develop a good drain walk and avoid the water completely.

| | | Go straight through the muck, it's the only way. The more muck there is, the less likely the drain has already been explored (unless you find the muck, and footprint postholes already in the muck...then it just sucks) On fourth thought, maybe snowshoes? It might be possible to stay on top of the muck without sinking in as much? Or you'll just get especially stuck, having bigger, flatter feet to make more surface tension with the drain muck. | | | Thanks for all the tips. Here's the battle plan... This drain might be a very important part of a bigger system we are very curious about. This is the only available entrance that we know of so we have one of two choices. We know where the manholes are, so we can find one of those further down the drain and start from there rather from the beginning. OR: gear up, and walk through that shit

| | | Walk along the edge, obviously... I was brainstorming silly ideas: Trekking/skiing poles (Could make things worse?) Cardboard (how far is the muck?) Crawl to distribute weight more evenly (yuck!) Showshoes??? (probably a terrible idea?) Pack Raft (probably not watery enough though?) Two or three of those pool floaty things? Pass them forward to keep going, etc.

| | | We've made it through 3 ft deep mud before. I guess we just keep going, and when all else fails, give the fuck up. Then come back with a case of beer and an attitude.
