I dunno why y'all keep posting pictures from theaters 1 and 2. Theater #3 is totally where it's at...

Yes, there is indeed a toxic storage tank in the basement of said theater. I managed to ninja by all of the snipers fire one night (I was wearing camouflage) and slip by the alarms/trip lasers etc... Upon closer examination of the tank, I realised that it was really harboring 10,000 gallons of Bukkake. Then I saw a ghostly apparition and gtfo of there.

You are soooo lucky to be able to tell this story, I would never have even tried to get down to the said tank. I might have made it past the laser traps, but not the damn snippers. Those guys are the chit...I've been told they were trained by C.H.U.D.

It relates back to a period in cinema when theater owners were heavily experimenting with ways to bump up the audience experiences. Vibrating seats was one, "smellovision" was another. The latter of which relates to the toxic tank in the basement. Unfortunately, it turned out that the most effective chemicals to create "smell-o-vision" were also laced with PCBs.

ETMJ: Your photos really capture the elegant beauty in decay of this theater.

That's a really cool bit of history, I never heard of any actual places that experimented with smell-o-vision, I wonder why they just didnt get rid of the stuff instead of keeping it in a storage tank in the basement

It is expensive and, well, toxic. Easier to keep it in one place until it is declared a Superfund site.

true, but you'd think they'd be somehow legally required to dispose of the stuff somehow especially since it's toxic, rather than just keep it in the basement. I wonder why theres so much security in that place, obviously theres something in there they dont want people getting at.

here's a photo of the tank you're talking about. the pipes are what brought the fluids up into the theaters for the "smell-o-vision". the concept was way ahead of its time.

That is really fucking cool! I never even heard of the terrace ever having smell-o-vision before, that's awesome that you got a picture of it, it looks like brand new, no rust or anything.

Because of the PCBs, it is federally regulated and must be maintained. From time to time, inspectors have to visit the place and make sure there are no leaks. Pretty routine with this kind of thing, really.

Your best bet might be to just hang around when the monitors are there and see if they will let you in. You'd likely need a full protective hazmat suit, though. Do you have one yet? It is a staple of MN exploration.
