Abandoned houses: worth it or not?

There not being too much to explore around these parts, I've had my eye on two abandoned houses that were boarded up when they expanded a road and added bridge access in the mid 90's. They're both kinda big, more of a suburban type deal, but I thought it might be interesting to at least try to get in.

Would these two houses be worth going to at all? They can't be all too interesting inside, and being on a main road (albeit with brush cover in the back) it might be something of a risk, especially with a hand pry bar to get a board off. But then again people might not notice/care seeing as they've been empty for 15-20 years.

Your thoughts? Is it worth the possibility of being caught/even the work of entering?

I thought the same thing for a long time. There are a lot of abandoned houses around me, and for a long time I didn't bother with them because I didn't think they were worth it. Then we took a trip about a week ago to some of the local places around town and they were really, really cool. Cooler than I expected. The nice thing about abandoned houses is a lot of times there's a BUNCH of shit left behind. One of the houses I could have spent all day just going through the stuff left there. It was much more personal, going through someone's personal belongings, than seeing a wheelchair left behind or machinery. In this case, it was obviously an old woman's house--there was a needle and thread and a bunch of fabric, jars and cooking utensils, even a piano.

Also, at least around here, houses are much lower key, so there's not as much risk. Most of the places we parked right in the drive way and walked up to the place, and never had a problem. It's easier to get out of trouble even if you are questioned, too, than if you're at some big hospital or industrial buildings. I say go for it. There's only one way to find out if it's worth it. Just my $0.02.

Abandoned houses are usually really, REALLY boring. You can ring your local real-estate agent and get tours of all the empty houses you want. Blank walls, dirty carpets, peeling paint if you're lucky.

HOWEVER-

Every once in a while, you will find a gem that will blow your socks off and you will remember it for the rest of your life. Old houses can be time capsules, history books, all rolled into one big emotional roller coaster. Discovering the artifacts and stories of the people that inhabited a space can be an amazing experience- look for documents, pictures, and the like.

You can usually tell if a house is worth it or not by peering in through a window. If these houses are nearby, I'd say they're definitely worth checking out.

Well, they're about a half-hour walk from school, so when it gets warmer out, I'll just throw a camera and a pry bar into my pack and bring a friend. There's one McMansion-y one which won't be as cool, and an older normal ranch-ish thing behind it (even got the TV antenna still on!). Even if it's all empty, which it most likely will be, I could at least get some pictures of the exterior and sit on the roof for the sunset or something. I mean it's close/easy, why not.

I just started UE, and besides an old Sonic, I've only explored houses. The two I went into I truly enjoyed and have 4 more houses on my list. But then again every time I go into a house, I leave thinking, "I can't wait to get down into N.O. and getting into that power plant and theme park."

Do it, it's worth the time.

Only one way to find out... if they suck, just leave. But if they kick ass, which is definitely possible, you'll be glad you went.

Abandoned houses are invaluable for those between-explore jitters. And sometimes they can be pretty cool, as sort of an added bonus.

Houses are definitely worth a look. Chances are, if they were abandoned because of the road project, they're pretty empty, but I'd still check them out. You'll never know unless you look.

i think it really depends on your personal preferences. some people love houses so much they practically only explore them, while others stay away if at all possible. totally up to you. if you don't have much else in the area, why not check it out? could be worth it. and at least it's something to do. =)

Go for it.

Some of the coolest sites I've been in were the ones I expected the least from.

Take this, for example:

Don't get your hopes up, though. Hope for the best, expect the worst.

it really depends on the kind of people whose lives you find fascinating. more often than not an abandoned house was last inhabited by a slob, or a family of slobs, which would account for the house falling into disrepair to the point of being condemned. if you look for houses that were expropriated, or recently burnt-down, you might find something interesting but i personally dont find old merle haggard 8tracks polyester pup-tent jumbo panties and dirty diapers to be fascinating artifacts, id sooner be as far away from them as possible.
when scouting an abandoned house, a moment to consider the house's circumstances will often tell you what you can expect to see inside of it. it's up to you what you want to look at.

i've been to several abandoned houses over the past few months and most of them have been really fascinating- either from what's been left behind or the architecture/decor. they're relatively easy to find (at least where i live) and to access. a great way to kill a lazy afternoon, imo- but it all boils down to personal preferences.

Unless you are ridiculously busy or have hundreds of places to explore lined up, you might as well explore whatever you find. It helps to keep the jitters down between the great locations.

Like the previous posters said, sometimes they can be great but often times they're boring. The best ones are the ones that look like the inhabitants just vanished.

Houses are good when you get those jitters because they are usually pretty quick and easy. Helps when you can't get out and do something awesome

If you're in it for the exploring, houses are pretty low-rent, but they're always worth a look if you're in it for the photography.
