Agree with the above, it's cold & miserable, but it's got definite advantages.

-Marine sites are much easier to access w/o being noticed because no one's out on any bodies of water: see-lighthouses

If photography is a function of the photographer then I will contentedly buy all my gear on craigslist. (/from livestrong2009)

I went exploring today,it was deathly cold out. The snow was drifted high on the floors, and the roof consisted partially of old windowframes. Not the brightest thing to do but good times nonetheless.

Found out a new ...inconvenience just yesterday. We were exploring an old factory that had plastic tile floors, well the glue that holds them down is pretty much rotted away and the tiles are warped, so as you walk across them the glue that's left which is brittle breaks away and the tiles pop off the floor. That and the tiles themselves are brittle so they snap and crack when you walk on them, which isnt too bad except when your trying to be super quiet like we were.

Crunching tiles under your feet is the norm out here.

Step to the centre of the tile to minimize the noise.

It is actually kind of nice when it it freezing cold because fewer people are out, and, at least I like to think, those that are out are too focused on getting out of the cold to pay attention to you.

I have had problems with batteries in the cold, though. Now, whenever it is below freezing, I keep my flashlight and phone in a pocket on the inside of my jacket when I'm not using them. That way my body heat keeps them from getting to cold.

Don't get your car stuck in the snow when you're doing illegal parking in someones active home driveway by doing half donuts in their driveway, stupid.

Don't hurry and take pictures of the city surrounding a 10 story high tower which happens to have a 3 inch thick layer of ice on it. You may almost fall to your death.

Especially when you have a distinct fear of that exact circumstance.

Was out on the weekend exploring... Good lord was I cold. I had heat packs in both shoes (neither did any good - do thermal socks block heat radiating into the sock? I couldn't figure out why it had no effect), in my pockets, in my gloves, and was otherwise well layered. Man, I really need to just fucking hibernate.

Went into an abandoned nursing home this afternoon- my fingers were too stiff/numb to change exposure or focus. (not good when it's dark and you need longer exposures) Had to get a friend to load the film for me. Needless to say I'll be going back when it's lighter/warmer out.

Recently we were exploring an old radio factory and on our climb out I fell a story or so (Didn't hurt myself, short fall) because my hands were so cold I didn't have any grip strength left! LOL

just the boot ones werent working? I did get some dud ones at a dollar store once.
I always put them under my socks against my foot (sometimes one on top and bottom)

Also they take a while to heat up so i crack em in the car beforehand.

Biggest thing about the winter is you never wanna sweat. its awful. and its easy no matter how cold it is esp with all the layers. Simple things like walking up stairs or hills, take it slow.
I like the long underwear that wicks away moisture.

Also boots up to you knees are good. that way the bottom of you pants can get wet as hell once the snow melts when you are inside but you still dont feel anything.

I usually wear thick tights, 3 pairs of socks, two pairs of long underwear , thick jeans or army pants, two hoodies, a jacket. two pairs of gloves (one thin so i can take photos and a thicker pair over), a hat and a scarf. im usually good in new england for about 6 hours that way though very round once its all on

Don't be silly, of COURSE we would have!!!

/You were carrying the car keys.

Chris...

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

Sorry that this is a little late coming, but it shows the benefits off keeping your camera warm....you don't ruin expensive SD cards..The cold cracked this one on me.
