Not sure which forum this belongs in, but then again I'm a moderator so whatever.

I bought myself a new tripod last weekend, and on my second outing with it I accidentally bent one of the legs. While trying to straighten it, I snapped it off, just the very bottom part. I guess it would still serve as a tripod at 2/3 its full height.

Anyway, anyone know if it's possible to repair a tripod?

Best case scenario, I'll get it back to the store and they'll replace it thinking it was defective, but it was kind of a sketchy store to begin with, selling equipment that had fallen off the back of a truck in Japan.

Same thing happened to me, sinking in a rotten floor and using it as a crutch. I bought the exact same tripod used (broken of course) and used one of the good legs. I often leave my tripod strapped to my pack now, as I have made a nice clamp mount, using a ball mount, and a C-clamp with some steel thread to mount it. I also am in the process of welding on a section of threaded rod to a chain vice grip, similar to this.. http://www.bhphoto...ain_Vice_Grip.html

i'll post pix in the morn...

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

Step 1: Obtain wooden dowel.
Step 2: Align dowel with broken piece of tripod leg and still attached piece of tripod leg.
Step 3: Duct tape liberally
Step 4: ???
Step 5: Profit

I would try and return it. I always save all the packaging for @ least six months or so. Then mention this was a gift for a friend & how embarrassed I was when he opened it to find it damaged. Works all the time. As long as ur not asking for $ back, most places are willing to exchange to keep a customer happy.

Ps. If you need to repair. Get it straight as possible. Put a small piece of dowel inside the leg. Now put a wrap of fiberglass mesh tape(tight as possible) & a coating of JB weld. Should hold damn near anything.

i bought a manfrotto, it was 80 bucks but it fits in my backpack so its less likely to get dropped or smashed while climbing and its a lot sturdier than a cheap one

Nice DIY project, great idea! Seems kind of similar to the Gorilla-pod, although the clamping ability of your idea is really good... I own a Gorilla-pod and I've found it to be quite useful in generic situations.

Breaking news: white guy rips off Namdaemoon camera vendor.

Got me a brand new tripod for the big Christmas Day voyage.

And this isn't relevant, but I'm viewing UER while wearing a headlamp.

Throw that Harry-Homeowner piece of shit in the dumpster and buy a Manfrotto. It will be the last tripod you ever have to buy.

..speaking of which, left my half broken well used el cheapo at a bunker last week, simple case of hot day and absent mind and walked 20mins back to car and couldn't be bothered retrieving it. so broke the new yr budget by buying a new lens and tripod, spent 40 bucks on a tripod normally 75 ( sale ) ...actually glad i spent the extra, nice weight, swivel head...doubt my photos will improve though but if i need to take a swing at someone it will actually do some damage this time

Totally agree, had a cheap "Verbon" at one point and it fell apart while I had my gear on it, thankfully I was able to grab my gear before it hit the ground.
Manfrotto's are pricey but I've never had one fall apart and there virtually indestructible, you could also get a "Gitzo" if you've got a tonne of money to spend.
Check Kijiji there's a few on there for an excellent price.

My tripod should be arriving today if UPS doesn't try and deliver to the wrong house like they did yesterday.

Tripods can be pricey but I bought a really nice one so I only have to buy one and it will last.

Protip- the Sunpak DigiPro 8500 is actually a damn good tripod, and it's cheap too ($60). It's the ONLY Sunpak product I'd recommend anyone buy (I think it's some sort of fluke, all of the other Sunpak tripods are junk). Mine has survived two years of major beating-up and my only complaint is that the supplied head is pretty crappy, but it's easy to switch it out for something decent (like a Bogen Ballhead)
