| | | Posted by Stewie Being a geezer as I am, I definitely remember the "blackout" of 2005. Many were forced to actually go out and explore abandoned buildings.
|
Many of us were also forced to 'wank off to the point of physical exhaustion' too! Check Email ------> Check Porn -----> Check UER -----> Check Porn again ----> Repeat Cycle When the 30-50 minute job of 'Check UER' was removed??? Oof!! Right arm muscles like Thor I tell ya'! /nevar forget Chris...
We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit. |

No, you're thinking of the power blackout of 2003. UER itself had a big blackout in 2005 for a few weeks when our dedicated server went down and 1&1 didn't fix it. -av

Hence why there was a fundraiser and the purchase of a UER server. Wow, I remembered something!

i was close; both of them caused a period of darkness along the shores of Lake Ontario...and I wasn't exploring yet in 2005 to have noticed your blackout.

| | | It's been a while since I had any "Downtime".
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too! |

| | | Posted by DJ Craig Glad you got it back up so quickly! I found it pretty funny how almost every status update that came up on my Facebook during the 36 hours that it went down had something to do with UER being down. "Where were you during the great UER outtage of 2009?"
Me too. But I'm a broke college kid.

Heh, I was one of those losers. I had to go hang out in that dead-ass facebook UER group.

I was too, but to my credit, I was browsing UER when it crashed ... I thought it was my schools shitty internet, but sadly nope. Glad to be back online. And thanks Av for the downtime; I got both my research papers done ... AND found a location I ran across after getting lost driving around "mystery mill" but couldn't re-find it. I mapped 3 more CT long lines and might have found two more potential long lines. And I found a new local camera shop. Wow I got a lot done. [last edit 11/12/2009 4:38 AM by \/adder - edited 1 times]

We've been with "shared hosting" and "private server / dedicated server" hosting before. When shit goes down, you are at their mercy to fix it. And usually they suck. UER does not run on Linux, so most of these "Fake server" companies would not work for us. Besides, we already own our own super-awesome server. It may occasionally need a part, but I've already ordered a spare power supply so that if this happens again, I'll have it on-hand. -av

| | | Yah I mean all things considered this setup seems to be working really well for you. Compared to other websites and forums I use, UER is very infrequently down. It's certainly down a lot less and for less time than when it was shared hosting.

Great , but PSU is not the only critical piece in a computer , maybe should you post you computer model and speecs and some folks out-there (including me) could have some other spare part for you just in case ? HD ram cpu mobo fan ect. [last edit 11/12/2009 8:01 PM by tijeff - edited 1 times]

I believe the server is a 1U Sun, correct me if I'm wrong. It's not going to have a lot in common with commodity PCs. CPU, RAM and HD are maybes, but even then they are likely server-class versions. The rest is all very likely going to be proprietary to Sun and expensive. Something like a motherboard failure is not going to be fixed with common parts or cheaply.
