| | Got skunked? What do you do? < on 9/29/2009 3:09 AM >
| | | So last sunday (yesterday) AKphill and I tried to get out to a couple of different places in the area. After a lot of driving, we managed to visit four different places with the very same results.... We got skunked. Locked gates and no one around, too much snow, and open gates and people around all kept us from getting to our targets. Very frustrating at times. We may be too far into the season to make it anywhere. What do you guys and girls do when this happens? Any cool stories?

| | | Keep trying. If it was easy the lamers would do this too. Sometimes you just go do stuff with weird people.
If it weren't so cold there I'd say "Drains." But you probably can't guarantee a dry return trip to the car ;)

those damn weird people. they're so weird. gosh.
anyway, i am certainly no stranger to this feeling where i come from. look up a bunch of possible sites that are near each other and make a day of it. you'll find something. or, you know, UE a playground.

Watertowers are fun. I keep epic failing at Watertanks though. Cell towers are like everywhere too. Can't rule out drains either. What to do? Suck it up, try to find something new, then fail at finding new things, drink your troubles away, come on UER drunk and rant about it.

| | | Rule #1: Always have a backup location. Rule #2: Always have a backup backup location. In the case of people being around, this is not always a bad thing. The more I explore, the more comfortable I am at just going up to people and asking for permission. Another explorer and myself were in Parry Sound at an abandoned hospital. There was no POE. What to do? a) leave b) contact someone local With nothing to lose, option b was chosen. The neighbour turned out to have a key to the hospital and gave us a phone # to call the owner for permission. If it was given, he would let us in. As it turns out, the owner didn't let us in because it was a hazard with syringes laying around and we needed hardhats. Also, the owner lived in Toronto and we were currently in Parry Sound. But a couple of months later I gave him a call and he arranged for me to get inside. You have nothing to lose by just talking to people and asking a few questions or asking for permission. It doesn't all have to be super-seekrit ninja trespassing. Sometimes you'll get a no, in rare cases you may get yelled at. Just be personable and polite. [last edit 9/29/2009 4:55 AM by Intrinsic - edited 1 times]

You just didn't want it bad enough. If you can just walk in, its more tourism than exploring.

| | | Haha I had a day like this last weekend. Friday was amazing, had some awesome locations and a few REALLY close run ins with security/cops. All this was within 45 minutes of my house as well. However, I make a drive 2 1/2 hours away to what seems like a bunch of awesome locations and not one of them pan out the way they should. It was still fun just hangin around the city, but every now and then something like that happens. You can't always win. Though, it takes more than a couple locked gates or people around to stop me from exploring a location. [last edit 9/30/2009 3:20 PM by Switch_ - edited 3 times]

| | | Don't expect this not to happen anymore once you're more experienced. It happens to all of us sometimes. It might happen a little less, but if this never happens to you, then you aren't challenging yourself enough.

| | | Happens to us all at some point! It's when you drive for 5 hours and get to a place that seems tight as a nun's that you should put in that little extra effort to find that loose board or unlocked door on a rooftop. It all depends how determined you are to get into a place really. I've not let people stop me from getting in somewhere either. I've had it where I have gone through a broken window/ climbed fences on a busy main streets and tend to find that most people look the other way as they don't want to get involved unless they have an interest in the place themselves.

When I first read the title of this thread, I was really hoping that that was the subject matter. The last time I was "skunked" was literally because I had been sprayed by a skunk. Me and a friend were going to open up abandoned parts at an active prison. We had made a new point of entry a week earlier, but needed to return with tools to progress further inside the building. It was 2 in the morning and we were running across a field, and something in the corner of my eye startled me. It was a fucking skunk, and it sprayed me dead on. When we got to the brush at the edge of the field we could see the point of entry, and there was a cop car parked right next to it. They hadn't found the entrance and were just parked there watching traffic, but we couldn't wait it out like we normally would because the smell was so fucking bad. The clothes I wore that night smelled for nearly a month, no matter what I did to wash them...

+1 The only skunking I've gotten is when I get to a site that doesn't exist anymore, or is such a ruin that it's not worth exploring. Last week, for example.

You can say that again!
As for getting skunked around Fairbanks? I'm not sure what you and AKphill were looking into, but I'd try (and try again) till I got the liberation from prying eyes around those opened gates. Maybe try late night/early morning. I think too much snow would prob be good b/c you could tell if anyone else had been around, unless it was just so much you couldn't drive up to it? Your persistence will pay off in spades! Don't give up.
