Known locally as the "Decew Mine", this is actually a service tunnel built in the 1800s for the Decew Power Plant. This tunnel was used to exhaust water collected from the falls, then used in turbines which flowed out this shaft to the small creek below

OMFG! l00k at the ORBZ!

End of the line - the tunnel was sealed off

I've heard of this place but have no idea how to the falls or the mine. I know the property tis on though and have parked at that parking lot before. Do you need to pay or get permission to enter the property or is it like Short Hills where you can just wander in? And I'm assuming I'll need rubber boots as it looks rather wet in your pics and its too cold to go barefoot this time of year ;)

It's like the Short Hills - you can wander around there at your leisure.

I've been in that tunnel dozens of times, and also the one next to it. Unfortunately, the 2nd one is sealed off now, too. I do have 1 old pic I took, though:

Before they cemented off the exit (which comes right out of the side of the gorge, as a waterfall) - we used to climb right up & out through the waterfall you see there. Pretty cool.

The old mill itself was awesome in the old days, too, but I don't have any pics. I happen to know the man who did the majority of the restorations, as well. (Lobsinger)

All I can tell you is those tunnels are/were for outflow from a water treatment plant, which is still in use today, AFAIK. The "waterfall tunnel" (what my friends & I always called it) is actually extremely dangerous, as the flow can suddenly more than double in an instant. They blocked it off because kids were killed (it could be an urban myth, but I can totally see it happening - similar incidents have happened at Balls Falls over the years...) when they got swept out & over. Trust me, there's no pool at the bottom, only a jumble of rocks. Here's some pics I have:

In the 3rd pic, you can see the waterfall tunnel exit, in the background. You should still be able to get in by climbing a fence to the right of a reservoir, down the path along the gorge a little ways. A stream drops straight down into it.

The 4th pic I threw in for the helluvit. I didn't jump.

The last pic is a closer view of the waterfall tunnel, and how it's sealed off. The tunnel the OP explored (my 1st pic here) is just out of view beyond.

BTW it's a great place to go swimming in the summer. The pool under the waterfall has a relatively smooth gravelly bottom & doesn't have any funky currents or anything. (for a fun ride, try sliding down the concrete chute that spills into the first pond above!)

Went and explored the place today. Was shocked at the sheer magnitude of the ravine and falls. I've driven by that mill a hundred times and never knew that it was back there.

Was glad I bought some rubber boots just for the occasion, as there was a lot of water in the cave and we also went behind the falls and climbed all along the far side of the gorge down to the lower falls, then crossed the river (which I managed to fall into, yay me) and then climbed up the crazy wall of the gorge.

My heart was pounding the whole time. Incredible workout! Will have to post my pics later as my camera is still drying and I dont want to turn it on yet

hahahaha

Most of the images are lightpainted, hence the LSD effect

The cave is full of bats- I feel bad for the little guys, most of them are quite sick with 'White Nose" syndrome.

Great place to shoot at night though!

It's a great place in the winter, especially if it's been a particularly cold one. Some years the areas behind/beside the waterfall turn into a crazy maze of ice caves & giant icicles etc. Very pretty & it presents great photo opportunities. But it's also very dangerous, so be aware. All it takes is a loud noise & one of those icicles can come down on you - had a close call myself, once. Also, you've gotta really watch it if you climb around the mound of ice at the foot of any waterfall, as sometimes it can be just a super-thin ice crust covering a very deep pile of "slush" - ice climbers have died that way. I once fell through up to my chest, when I was 12. (@ Balls Falls) Can't imagine drowning in slush. :[
