| | | | Water towers! < on 8/11/2009 6:03 AM >
| | | Water tower p0rn thread! I'll start out with this: So normally when people talk about climbing water towers, they are talking about ones like this:
WELL...today Aurelie and I got on top of one of THESE motherfuckers: 1.
(photo by Evan-e-Cent) I've always wondered about whether these water towers have ladders inside and what they would be like. There are currently work crews working there for the next three weeks painting this tower. And it turns out they DO have ladders inside and even a pipe that goes through the inside of the water tank with a ladder in it so you can get onto the viewing deck on the top. 3.
(photo by Evan-e-Cent) This is the ladder inside the big cone-shaped room at the base of the tower...sorry about the blurriness, lighting and focusing were very difficult: 5.
(photo by Aurelie) It was difficult to breathe and keep our eyes open as we climbed the ladder. There was extremely dense dust in the air. 7.
(photo by Aurelie) This is looking down into the actual water tank. It was even MORE dusty in there so we decided not to go down unless we come back with respirators. But we did manage to climb into it from the bottom later. 9.
(photo by Aurelie) The skies look starry in front of us, but there was a pretty scary thunder storm with lots of lightning quickly approaching from behind which made us pretty nervous... 10.
(photo by Aurelie) More pictures from Aurelie and I's trip are here: http://www.djtricities.com/watertower Does anyone know what the actual advantage is of these modern encased water towers over the old ones with the big trusses? It seems to me like they would be structurally much more difficult to build and much less stable? Post your water tower p0rn!

| | | Heh. Well now I know what it looked like inside. I still find your "did you two just come out of a drain?" comment when you came out highly chuckalicious. Glad to see you got photos.

| | | Looks like a wicked climb and adventure...and view too. Strange looking 50's style lunar base tower...never seen one like that. If you're gonna be asking for tower pr0n....how about you kick things off, give us an example of what you're looking for ;)
You may think you can fly.....but you'd better not try it. |

The structure isn't much more complicated and should be just as stable (ever hear of on falling over?), and I would guess the reason is that it uses less material and doesn't look so ugly. Most small towns, these are the biggest things they build, and they plaster their name all over it. And as I'm sure you know the older ones are never quite as big as the modern ones, because that truss structure needs to be too deep and uses way, way too much steel.

| | | This thread is awesome. I am obsessed with climbing water towers, but those enclosed-ladder ones I could never get into. There are several of them around here, but they are all locked up tight.

| | | The view from the top looks fantastic. I always wondered the same thing about wind-turbines, turns out they have the same ladder system inside them that goes up to the top. That's good news for me too, because out here on the prairie, there's about ten times as many wind turbines as water-towers! Anyway, nice find and cool pics!

| | | Nice pics! If it weren't for these, I'd prolly never see the inside of one of those things. The water tower in my town is the same "newer" style. Makes me want to go climb it!

| | | Echoey! Drained for winter, summer resort, aunt was caretaker of the place. Convenient because they always had plenty of time to repaint inside. I will try to get a full pic of this metal tower, it dented on the top when it was brand new b/c the dumbasses putting it in didn't open the vent valve up top. It and a twin like it replaced an open top concrete one that was demo'd a few years ago. There'd be dead seagulls and stuff floating in the "potable" public water, says my mom, who used to swim in it, or, more likely, knows someone who claimed to.
