I didn't want to take any risks

Here's the problem. Anything you do is inherently risky - every choice has effects, and you'll face consequences. If you want to do things, you'll face risks. I bet you drove there. That was a risk. Do you know how to tell if a building is safe to walk on?

You put weight and see how the floor responds. There are things you can do to minimize the risks of collapse. Bring a buddy, tell a reliable person when to expect you back, carry a cell phone. But if you want NO risk? Hide at home. Don't do interesting things. Be a Normal person. And die of one of the risks we all face, like being stabbed to death by a psycho-wielding carrot.

What Apple Snail said. Look for signs of the structure being weak. Holes in the floors, cieling, walls are a good sign of decay. Put some pressure on the floor and see what happens.

It also helps to go with a partner.

risk aside one way to find out if the buildings are structurally sound (only works if the property is for sale) call the number and ask the Realtor. you tell them you represent a company that is looking at buying.

Wow I can't wrap my head around that one but I think when I die I would like to go finding out what that is like.

Typically if the building is of the older style of construction, I keep to the obvious paths of strength on a suspicious surface. The roof at one of my favorite locs has beams that support the roof (I think it's sheet metal judging by the sound) so I walk on the beams that support said panels. Not only does that provide safety from a structural integrity viewpoint, it helps to minimize the noise made by treading on the roof. That's advantageous just in case anybody else is inside the complex, aside from my team that is

A basic knowledge of construction practices is a great advantage. I just sit and analyze random buildings in free time, thinking inside my head 'What would be the best course to take to (whatever)'. Hopefully this helps.

I've used heavy objects like rocks and sticks to test the floor ahead of me. I've been in only one situation when the floor looked bad and that was at camp 30 in the gym/admin building. Just stick with what AnAppleSnail said and you should be fine.

I find, the safest places to walk when you're not sure if the area is structurally sound are around the floor edges and places where you know the floor is supported by a wall or load-bearing structure. Never walk out onto open floors if you're not sure of the strength, and keep to the edges of the room. On wooden stairs, walk near the left and right walls of each step and don't step right on the centre of the step. Try to disperse your weight as even and lightly as possible. Walk carefully and always pay attention to what the structure is telling you.

Wear boots with a metal sole (steel shank), and some hefty clothing so you at least have some protection if you take a wrong step.

It's your call though, you can only enter at your own risk.

If you REALLY want the long answer, read "Why Buildings Fall Down":

This is great advice and it also helps in keeping quiet in areas of unknown occupation. Less flexure in the floor means less creaks and groans.

Also always be on the look out for excessive water or fire damage. Fire damage is easier to notice, but wooden floors that are excessively wet without ventilation rot out. Same goes for metal floors and roofs (except they rust not rot).

When on lower levels, always check the ceiling for damage and light bleed. Its a good indication of how the upper floor will hold out. Also see what the construction of that upper floor looks like from underneath. Are there beams or open spans? keep that in mind when you go up. Also holes in the cieling may mean water damage to the floor below, be careful.

And finally, use all your senses when in areas of unknown condition. Feel how the floor reacts; Look at how its constructed and any warning signs; listen for groaning, creaking, cracking sounds or even pieces of the floor you are on falling to the next level; And smell/taste (the air - not licking) for mold and rot. Being observant is key.

I only use the N word when I mean it. Just like at the mill, caution and awareness of just how far you fall is useful - unless it will scare you off a bit of picking your way along sturdy ex-floor. Upon further review, what I was walking on in the higher levels of the mill was actually the wooden ceiling boards...
