I like this shot, but help me improve it (and hopefully others)

As the title suggests, I like this shot. It comes from my most recent trip to a meatpacker. The place is really pretty empty overall, but full of these big heavy doors and holes in the walls from structural damage, fires, disuse, etc. It's pretty dark inside, and this was a fairly sunny morning.

For reference, I shoot a Panasonic DMC-FZ28, 27-486mm (Equivalent) f2.8 - 8.0 lens built in. It has full manual controls as well, up to 60 sec shutter. Manual focus is tough to use, because it's joystick controlled, but I'm getting the hang of it.

I have photoshop, so I could blend, but I kind of want to avoid that if possible. I'd like criticism that will help me take better pictures before/without editing.

Here's the EXIF:
Jun 28, 2009
768×1024 pixels – 132KB (Resized for Picasa)
Filename: P1020370.JPG
Camera: Panasonic
Model: DMC-FZ28
ISO: 400
Exposure: 1/10 sec
Aperture: 3.0
Focal Length: 7.1mm (Around 40mm equiv.)
Flash Used: No

And the shot:

In my opinion the window and parts of the right-wall are too blown out with whiteness that they're not recoverable.

It'd probably take multiple shots to pull that off, e.g. bracketing or HDR. Attempts to lighten the brightness of the white will probably just end up as grey instead of the actual colors of the wall or outside.

That's my experience anyway. I'm not too great at photoshop though.

If it's any help for analyzing this picture, the wall is indeed white on the right side of the pillar and gray on the left. I know it's kind of tough to tell, but that's fairly accurate to how it looks for real.

You might be able to adjust the shadows/highlights to help lighten the shadows and darken the light.

I'll give this a shot later on. Thank you, sir!

Any other useful criticism is appreciated, all!

This will be tough to work with. The parts that are overexposed have nothing to recover. I would suggest starting with a shorter exposure. If it were me, I would let the window be blown out, but not the haze around it, or the back wall.

What I do with photoshop is use 1 layer of underexposed at 100% opacity, and another layer of overexposed at 50%. I then go through and use the eraser with a 0% softness, and erase the severly overexposed parts. My suggestion is, basically, take a slightly underexposed shot, layer the one you posted over it at 50%, and erase the window and back wall.

Ahhh yes. Well I have been tinkering with it in Photochop, and the advice you gave gives a pretty decent result. However, I'm always looking for advice on the composure standpoint so maybe I wont have to finesse it with PS. Thanks!

This is an insanely, insanely boring subject. I think I would pass on this shot because it is...insanely boring.

yeah, totally (like, OMG!). but dude, besides the lack of subject is the totally blown out window. you gotta avoid that on a digital camera. don't take shots when the light source is in front of the lens unless it's A) not a window, and you use flash (if you wanna illuminate your subject in a backlit photo).

but rule of thumb is don't shoot bright windows on sunny days. unless you're at "eagle river" power plant. then you have no choice.

leave the gun. take the cannoli.
