UE DB Ratings System Removed
< on 5/27/2009 9:54 PM >

I guess this system was more popular than I thought, since I've gotten a bunch of complaints already, but here's the official announcement.

I've removed the ratings system from the Location Database. This includes the ability to rate locations, and the display of the rating on the index page.

Here are some of the reasons that prompted this change:
  1. The rating system never evolved into the type of useful information I hoped it would. Many locations were rated extremely high, such as 8/10 for extremely blurry or generally worthless photos. Also, because different people have different opinions on "coolness", locations that many members would consider boring (such as an abandoned, demolished shack) had ratings of 10/10.
  2. The rating star prompted many people to go through the DB and view the required number of photos and make an uninformed rating, just to get the star. These ratings are pretty worthless.
  3. The information generated by the ratings system wasn't really used by anything. The only place it appeared was a list of "top locations" on the statistics page, however the places that topped that list were not the UEDB's best and brightest.

To answer some of your other questions:
  • Anyone who has a Rating Star will get to keep it. However, it will no longer be possible to earn this star. Sorry, folks.
  • The requirement for the LDB star will now be 5 locations, the rating requirement has been removed.
  • There may be some system implemented in the future to recommend good locations or something, but I haven't thought about this much.

Cheers,

Oh the irony. I was having this exact discussion while on a road trip just this week, about the UER voting system. In particular: how it seemed that some people were receiving high votes (9/10, 10/10) from friends of theirs for locations that were blah, while other people's colorful photogenic locations received 5/10 from strangers.

Then we had those anonymous (or so they thought) people who voted 1/10 in a deliberate attempt to downvote people's ratings.

I think it was a wise move Mr. AV to remove the vote system entirely since it was prone to misuse. Something about a road to hell, pavement and good intentions comes to mind

I never rated anything in the DB for that reason. Never saw the need to. If I rated anything, it would have been an accidental miss-click. Local users know where the good locations are. If you wanted to have your pictures rated, there are already appropriate forums for that. I always felt it was a rather useless feature that allowed new members to feel as though they contributed to the site, even if haven't really contributed anything.

It was a good in idea in theory; but it was misused.

ah, the infamous voting problem... have seen this on various sites...

voting is a nice feature, but unfortunately some people seem to be too immature to give honest votes.

I have no complaints about it being removed.

I never was sure how to vote on those things. Coolness and content is individual. Quality well sheesh. Are we talking the awesome photographers here that most can't compare to or quality based on hey you got lucky, it turned out nice.

Kinda glad it is gone. I did not want to trash when someone wanted to share but shit how do rate a parking lot .

On one hand, it's sad not to be able to do something like this because of stupid politics, but on the other hand we can tell if a place is worthwhile or not from the photos people post, so rating is sort of redundant.

For the life of me I can't remember where I saw it but at the time I was in the top 15 or so people who had viewed the LDB (I know i know) and I have to say that while the voting feature was fun, I probably won't miss it. In fact, I probably haven't rated upwards of 90% of the locations I have seen.
Why? For a lot of the reasons AV points out above. It was kind of a farce. I take photography pretty seriously and have to confess that I was often voting on the location as opposed to the imagery when I handed out 8's, 9's or the highly unlikely Nadia Commeneiciesque "perfect 10's", as opposed to the quality of the images. I also gave plenty of 4's but felt like a prick doing it as there weren't too many locations galleries that failed even though they should have. You certainly want to encourage people, but seeing so many blurry just super bad photographs tended to make me just lay off and not hurt anyone's good intentions by giving a 4 or less that they may have deserved on sheer artistic merit. The other side of the coin was that you could occasionally see some flaming happening with a location that was rated at 2 or 3 when the galleries were clearly worthy of more than a passing grade.

So the ratings really did become meaningless as mentioned above. Too much mediocrity getting high ratings, too much crap getting a passing grade or much better, there simply was no objectivity on display at all. I still think it was a great idea, applaud the effort, and say thank you for putting an end to the bullshit. UER is a better place without us all looking like idiots who can't tell an out of focus tower from an underexposed tunnel.

Thanks,

Guess I am still at number 15.

And by the way, no one comments in the LDB more than Wang and Samurai, I see those two everywhere and I mean EVERYWHERE!!!

Too bad they can't distinguish between board pages and photo pages - I hate being thought of as someone who might actually be reading all these threads especially when there are MORE blurry pictures to be seen, heh!

Hah,

# 40 people have donated more money to support the site than you have.

Damn I donated all those dollars when they were still more than a euro. Today, 100 dollar would be like EUR 0.02 cents (yes that's EUR 0.0002).

However, I agree with Av on the rating - I once made a long post on how one should rate a photo gallery on ontent Quality with objective criteria, and following those, most entries shouldn't have gotten more than a 5.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I actually found the rating system quite useful. I frequently travel, myself, and found it incredibly useful to see which locations were considered the "best" by the local community. As a photographer, I found this useful information invaluable, because - despite how much I'd like to - I simply can't see ALL locations, so the rating system was a great way to filter out the photographically uninteresting locations for the ones that really drew a following...

Jus' sayin' I kinda liked it.

neither is the Electoral College

I liked the system but its no big loss, locations I risked my ass and jail time to infiltrate got 6s and some state park locations any schmuck could pay 6 bucks and walk around in got 9s & 10s

go figure...
