water towers

There's this huge water tower by my house, and i've been wanting to get on it for a long time, i think i actually might go through with that sometime soon, but i was wondering if anyone else here has gotten on top of a water tower, and if you know of what kind of trouble you can get in for doing that. As for the security of the water tower...there isn't too much aside from a barbed wire fence, and the ladder to actually get up the water tower starts around 15 feet off the ground, so that might be hard to get to...and there's also a couple of houses near by...but other than that it looks pretty simple to get through and up on top. So is this too risky? the water tower is freaking huge too.. it looks something like this:

I have climbed water towers before, onces much bigger than that, as far as physical danger, there not to risky, after all, repair people can't risk their lives everytime they check on the tower, right?

Depending on how tall they are though, you might get tired climbing them. I once climbed a 900 foot radio tower, and I had to stop and catch my breath like 5 times on the way up, its much harder to climb longer ladders then you would think.

I doubt you would get in any trouble for climbing one either, really, what is there to damage other than yourself? There is no harm you could ever do to the tower just by climbing it, so I doubt if anyone saw you they would even both to report it - well, unless of course they thought you were trying to kill yourself.

God, I could never do that, I have a fear of heights, I can handle small ladders and stuff but I could never climb something like that.

heights don't bother me, but there is something eirie (spelling) about water towers, I think.

There is this huge tower near where i live, but it is made of concrete, and the vastness of the whole thing is really spooky. Also those towers are covered, but if you get on the top of any old towers, carefull not to fall through the roof or you are f*cked. There is this film that has a clasic example of that, and points out the fact that these things havve to drain sometimes, so you don't wanna get sucked down.

Not trying to scare you off, just pointing out the dangers. hehe.

I've climbed them before, I don't think I've actually done an active one, but there were several old ones in my town which were not used for water but still had radio antennas on them. The ladder for the best one started about 20ft off the ground, but we found an extension ladder under a radio shack on the ground. That was a popular high-school climb and grafitti location, but no-one was ever caught that I heard. I wanted to get into the empty interior but never got around to cutting the lock on the hatch.

Watch out for radio antennas and electric wires, also rusty ladders and unsafe railings (mostly on older ones). If it's an active one you could probably be considered a terrorist if the cops feel like being assholes.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

These are the really dangerous ones to climb - I don't suggest climbing these.

The main staircase is inside, but there is an emergency staircase on the outside, that spins around when you reach the slanted part, so that gravity works in your favor and you are somewhat on top of the ladder with your back to the water tower. Although I have seen it attempted by several people, I have never actually seen someone brave enough to complete the journey - and for good reason.

I also doubt the police could ever call you a terrorist for climbing a water tower. Maybe if they caught you with a bunch of explosives while you were doing it, but not if you were just climbing it for fun.

Rig up with climbing gear and it won't look like you are about to kill yourself, plus if you have a hard hat, and stuff, then people will think you are a maintenance guy, so they will just assume you belong their and not phone the cops. Don't look too guilty and you will be fine.

Good Luck.

a lot of people climb towers to vandalize them. i think thats the first thing that would run through a cops mind: "better get him down before he paints his name all over it."
i've seen many cool murals on water towers though. the tower for one old mill near here used to have the eye of ra on it. they painted it over though, sadly. i miss the giant eye watching over the surrounding area...

A 900 foot ladder? Good lord. Is there any possible way to make sure you don't fall to your death?

And agent x, this was just a 900 foot metal ladder you climbed??

Ohh and happy B-day mochi... nice pics too. Now I really want to UE a damn tower. I have an enormous radio tower next to my house, and I live in the country so entry and exit is nice... I know the woods.

Every time in the past I walk up to that tower, a truck always drives from the house that is on that property (the house isn't line of site), forcing me to boogie. I guess I'll have to figure out what the defenses are. Boy I would love a chance to put on my camos for UE and go through the woods.

If you're in the US i'd be real careful -- they could easily accuse you of trying to poison the water supply with.. oh, i don't know... film and a maglite... so be careful.

sounds like fun, but be careful of antennas up on things you climb. Microwave transmitters and TV transmitters are safe to the public when they are isolated by 900 feet of tower, but if you climb up and go past it, it could very well cook you from the inside out.

I remembe a while back a local tv channel was doing maintenance on their towers and every morning and evening the signal would be shutt off for 5 minutes while the workers went past the transmitters halfway up the tower. The workers would climb or be taken up by lift in the morning, the transmitters were turned back on and then the process was reversed in the evening to get them back down for the night.

Sorry, I exagerated quite a bit, I just looked the height of the tower on the net. The tower is 592 feet tall, so the ladder would of been about 550 feet high, and it ran up the side of the tower. It was perfectly vertical, and had no ledges or platforms to rest on. The first time I attempted it was in the winter and, although I was wearing gloves, my hands got cold about 250 feet up in the air, and I climbed back down. During the summer I tried it again and made it to the very top - although we had no camera's with us this time. From the bottom to the top, back to the bottom again took me a good 40 minutes. I could barely move my arms the next day they were so soar from the workout.

good stuff, x. Being a rock climber, I enjoyed watching it immensely. especially the part where you guys were doing the railings on a parking ramp or something and the guy mantling the roof from an arm hang. I know of some high (high relative to Fargo standards... they call a 9 story building a "high rise" here) light poles I've been contemplating getting a view from. I just may have to do that.

agreed, i climbed up an electrical tower once and took some pics and when they came back the electrical 'energy' or whatever had fried all the film, i can only imagine what those 'rays' did to my body...testicular cancer anyone?

Well, I don't exactly know what kind of tower it was, Im assuming radio, but you could hear a super loud buzz of electricity the whole time - which was kinda scary, but I wasn't close to the wire's so I wasn't too worried.

Its the large satalite dishes that i believe are quite dangerous. I watched this documentary that talked about the microwave radiation in the front of the dish, so if you fall into the path you will literally burn up.

we are beign whacked by all types of light every second of the day, so remember just because you can't see it doesn't mean its not there.
