UA City World MapUrbana drains Updated 12th January 2001

Giralang

Um, yeah. What can we say about this drain? Well it has an entrance, it is round, it once had a fire in it and theres water in the bottom. That enough? No? Well it is all we have right now. It was raining the day we last visited it so we didnt dare go in. More to come on this drain eventually. We do know that it has no upstream exit.

Gold Creek

Gold creek drain is out by the Gold Creek and Cokington Green complex. It is located right in the middle of the Barton Highway right by the entrance gate.

For some reason we were not very enthusiastic when we went up to visit it. We caught a lift up to Gold Creek, wandered around and found the drain entrance inside of a minute. But it just didnt look at all appealing. We sat down on the edge of the concrete, looked past the reeds at the entrance and decide to stuff it. Could be a great drain for all we know. Logically it should exit down in Ginninderra creek. Could be interesting if it has any rooms in it. Conclusion: Go explore the thing some day when we have a break from uni.

The picture shows the drain entrance and the gate to Gold Creek.

Kippax

We arrived at Kippax one day after getting on the wrong bus. Having a flashlight and camera with us we set off to explore this drain system. It was easy enough to find. Just head down hill (north) from the shopping center. Go over (or under) the main road and into the grass patch.

The drain is really weird in that it has two entrances. Yeah, a conventional one with a pond to catch pollution. But just up the slope a bit is a big pit which the drain runs through. Like they ended the drain there and for some reason decided to extend it another fifty metres or so.

We didnt explore this drain for two reasons. First, to get into the conventional entrance we would have to get our shoes wet. We had on our good shoes. To get into the pit entrance we had to slide down a rock slope. Not too difficult, but we had on our good clothes. Call us wimps, but exploring drains takes its toll on shoes and clothing. We had decided to use one set of shoes and cloths to explore drains. That way we would not stuff up our other clothes.

Lyneham drains

When we headed down to check out these two drains we had conflicting stories. Our friend Simon said they were both low, whereas some sources on the internet had mentioned "9 foot" drain heights. I think this is in fact the distance you will walk into these drains before realising how shit they are. Both drains are in fact about 5 foot high which means they are back breaking stoopy shit drains.

These drains were both so bad that we refused to photograph them. Kova wanted to but I explained it was a waste of film.

" But its a digital camera." He replied.
" Then its a waste of digital." Was my answer. " Theres only so much digital to go around you know. If I take a photo of that some poor bastard out there wont be able to get a digital watch because I wasted too much digital."

Dangerous gangs of Furbies roam Urbanas drains, armed with batons and broken glass, ready to waylay you for your spare change. Hey would we lie to you?
