Do NOT enter drains. Read this warning!

UA City World MapExit, Fall, Rambo, Underpass & Nazi

14th March 1998.

These five drains are all within 5 minutes drive of each other. Also in this area is Polluted and Sandown Park. These drains all drain into the same system, the Mile Creek. Being so close together these drains make an ideal day out. Starting early in the morning it is possible to do all of these drains in one day. The drains offer a fair bit of variety, ranging from small RCPs, double barrel tunnels, short sections or very rare plastic tunnel, Rectangular concrete sections a fun and slippery slide and a stunning waterfall room.

For more about these drains, read This Expo Report

Drain Reports

Map with points of interest marked
Note: The map is not accurate and is drawn from estimates of where features are in relation to above ground.

Rambo Rating:

1. Entrance to Rambo. The entrance of this drain is a double barrel RCP. The entrance is a bit unusual in that the water coming out of it pours through a grille into a small RCP which runs under the park southwards to Fall.

The entrance to Rambo.

Usually the right side RCP is drier than the left. The tunnel leads north from the entrance for about 100 meters (or slightly less) to a split. The left branch leads to a junction with the left side tunnel. The right branch leads up to an interesting feature. The tunnel grows low and splits into two short sections of low plastic pipe. Plastic pipe is rarely used in drain construction, Forgotten being a noticeable exception. Plastic pipe is usually very slippery, dirt and rocks on the bottom of the drain provide some grip. Past this feature the drain changes back into a single RCP that requires a lot of stoop. No fun.

Close up of the entrance of Rambo

The left tunnel from the entrance leads about 100 meters to the join with the right tunnel. The two tunnels continue north to a junction under the freeway.

This tunnel seems to be rarely visited by regular drain explorers, although there is a lot of local graffiti in it.

Exit Rating:

2. Entrance to Exit. This drain is located in the same park as Rambo and Fall, so it's easy to mistake the three. From Rambo it is possible to see the archery targets to the east, where exit is located. The entrance is similar to Rambo but it is a single barrel RCP rather than a double. This drain has the usual local's graffiti in the entrance which soon peters out.

About five minutes into the drain a manhole is located. This is unusual in that while it contains a Gatic at the top it also has a grille in it's side. This makes an ideal exit if the grille is open. Further down the drain is a split, with a small RCP leading left. A few meters stoop up this is an interesting gutterbox which is well worth seeing. There is no way to exit here but the view is good. 1999. It is possible to exit but the manhole covers weigh a lot. People have also been known to order pizza from down here then nick off when asked to pay.

The long gutterbox in Exit.

From the split the tunnel is a lower RCP that requires stoop. It's very plain until the big chamber at the end is reached. The stoop may be a pain but the chamber is worth seeing.

Fall Rating:

Fall is a good drain with some really interesting features that provides a good link between the southern drains of this group with the northern ones. It's well worth doing and very enjoyable.

3. Entrance to Fall. This is located in the extreme east of the park, quite close to Wellington Road. While there is a large grille room at the south eastern edge of the reserve the better entrance is via the smaller grilled manhole just near the nursing home. This is in the dip heading east. The word 'exit' is painted on the grille. There is also a very small RCP that can be found at the end of this dip that leads into the drain but it is full of dirt and mud.

A happy Id exits Fall.

Just inside the drain at the grilled manhole the grille room can be seen upstream. This section of drain requires some stoop, but just a minute or two downstream it grows large enough to walk upright in. A small room is also located 2 minutes walk downstream. It has a few tags in it such as from Cro and Bob.

Um, yes, the big grille room in Fall.

4. Side Overflow. One of the most unusual features of this is it's three side overflows. These are short sections of RCP running parallel to the main tunnel. A small connecting pipe just large enough to crawl through allows access to these side pipes. Huge bolted down grilles prevent access to the surface and visa versa. Not great for anyone needing to get out of the drain in a hurry.

A side overflow. Emor is in the short pipe that connects with the main drain.

funny modified graff5. Side Overflow 2 and emergency exit. Somewhere under the Greenvale Crescent Enterprise Park (Where they park the Enterprise) is another two side overflows. They are both on the western side of the tunnel. Somewhere here is also a very squishy side RCP which leads to a manhole just 4 meters away from the main tunnel It's a very tight fit! It's a belly slider or if you can, slide along with one leg tucked under your belly. The manhole contains an old two piece grille, either half of which can be flipped open. Use this exit only outside of business hours or you will get a truck in your face. It is in the driveway of a factory.

The tight manhole emergency exit. It is a two piece grille takes a big heave to move.

6. Split and exit. The main tunnel splits into two downstream of the last side overflow. The double barrel that continues southward is the same size of the main tunnel with two RCPs. Where they join a large chamber containing a great many small side pipes is found. The manhole at the top is the small square manhole found on the corner of a road.

The exit is located a bit of a way south in a canal way. It looks very much like the entrance to Rambo.

The southern entrance to Fall

Underpass Rating:

Beware of the Pit!!!

7. Upstream entrance to Underpass. This drain leads on from Fall. The entrance is a big fenced off basin with the small drain from Fall entering upstream. The grilles are swing types which can be easily opened. The entrance is a double barrel Rectangular Concrete drain. The floor of the drain is very slippery here. Inside the drain it curves to the right after a short way. There is often a lot of rubbish here. This is an ideal spot to look for money and other interesting stuff.

The entrance to underpass. Note the swing up grille

The two rectangular pipes change to RCPS after a while. Where they change an interesting arrangement of pipes and a pillar allow a gap between the two tunnels which can be climbed through easily.

8 The deadly pit! The tunnel ends where the two RCPs turn into a short section of Rectangular Concrete tunnels. The floor of these is rather gravelly, covered in rough stones which provide good grip. The end of the tunnel consists of a large pit with a canal running southwards past some grilles. The trick is to get across this slime covered pit without falling in. It can be done!

This is what can happen if you slip into the pit. If you go down the small pipe you're stuffed.

No, he's not dead, just resting - honest. Looks like Id kicked Emor but no such fun.

Nazi Rating:

Despite the offensive name that the drain has this is by far the best of the drains in this area that we have visited.

Note the tire tracks

Drain face

9. Drain Entrance. The big 3 meter high entrance to the drain can be a bit difficult to locate, take a look at the map provided above. The drain curves to the right then left a short way in, so it is not possible to see far into it. The drain continues almost due north for some distance. At the first manhole there is quite a number of messages from drain explorers. None of the manholes in this tunnel can be opened.

One of the big stalacmites in Nazi.

10. Waterfall chamber. This is a stunning feature! Just south of Dandenong Road there is a tunnel wide grille Just north of this, under the road itself is a huge and amazing chamber A waterfall about waist high runs across the entire width of the chamber. The ceiling of the tunnel is the highway above. From this tunnel six 1.4 meter RCP pipes lead north. The sheer size of the chamber, the amazing waterfall, with the cool shape of the entire room are just stunning. This chamber has got to be seen.

This picture does no justice to the chamber at all, but it gives an idea of what it is like.

From the waterfall chamber six stoopy RCPs lead a short way north to a large grille. This grille is a bit of a pain because it can not be opened and you have to stoop in it. You can't sit down either because the water is ankle deep. 2000. This grille is just on the north side of a road, near a car hire joint.
