Do NOT enter drains. Read this warning!

5 Mile Rating: 15th November 2000.

Map of 5 Mile Creek drain.

UA City World MapFive Mile I originally only visited a portion of this drain, and sadly missed out on much that it had to offer. This drain has two parts, both of which were worth exploring.

Five Mile consists of a series of tunnels and bluestone arches running under a main road and a Railway line.

1. Lower section. The lower section of the drain is partially flooded, but it is by far the best section. The stairway here alone is great to do on a sunny day. It is so beautifil in this part of the drain system, not only the short tunnel, but also the small canal like drain above.

2. Train underpass. The two bluestone tunnels and open canal near the railway line however is an interesting area to explore. It's relatively free of graffiti and is a nice quiet area. The downstream tunnel is fairly short tunnel, but higher than the upstream tunnel. It's quite cool how it emerges from under the Pizza Hut.

3. Upstream section. The upstream tunnel consists of a 1.8 meter RCP pipe which runs west under Salmon Reserve. The drain gets slightly bigger inside and eventually splits before turning north west to run under the reserve up towards Essendon Airport. The upstream end of the tunnel, the RCP section in it's self is nothing special.
