Do NOT enter drains. Read this warning!

130 Steps Rated 1st September 2000

UA City World MapThis drain features an abrupt drop off at the entrance.

This is a short drain, with several waterfalls and steps. It has a bit of a hair raising entrance, some nice and surprising features, lots of opportunity to slip over and a fun upstream exit.

Drain Report.

Map of drain with points of interest marked
Note: The map is not accurate and is drawn from estimates of where features are in relation to above ground.

1. The Entrance.

The entrance is a bit hairy, requiring a climb around the end of the fence, another climb down the ladder and entering the drain which is half way up the entrance wall. The floor of the drain is one of the most slippery encountered. Fooling around is not a good idea. From the entrance the stairs climb up into the hillside at a steep angle and the low tunnel ceiling requires a bit of stoop. Because of the need to lean forward this is not so bad.

2. The falls. Some way up the drain there are a set of falls present. A sturdy new ladder on the right hand side enables an easy traverse of the falls. Immeidetly above these falls the stairs continue. There is another guard rail here. At the top of the stairs the tunnel continues east for a while, at a low height. For some reason it is particularly slippery in this drain. After a time, the tunnel gets larger and curves northward. The newer tunnel shape is less slippery and much easier to walk upright in.

3. Exit. Some way up this tunnel a manhole is located on the left. This manhole has no lid on it so can very easily be used. It is a large square hole located on the side of a road just inside an old fenced quarry which is being used as a horse paddock. This region was being turned into a housing estate in mid 2000.

Beyond this exit, another 2-3 minutes walk is a split chamber. The two tunnels here both quickly get smaller and go no place worth looking at.

Waterfalls are another reason why I encourage you not to explore drains. Falling over them can be fatal or cause serious injury. Now how are you going to explain that one hmm? "Oh yes mr ambulance man it was like this." This web site contains the best highlights from the drain so there is no need for you to explore it yourself.
