World Trip 2004 - Calgary

I quite liked Calgary. it's a very compact city with a distinct north side and south side. Much like Canberra in Australia where I am living now. I met up with Anymouse and some of his fellow explorers who were very nice people/. They showed me around the town a bit and we went draining in one of the biggest drains in the city of Calgary.

Downtown Calgary's city skyline. I belive this park was remoddled for the winter olympics. Calgary was very sunny for a city which can be covered in snow in winter.

Anymouse seals the lid on the drain we explored.

Much of the drain was this large retangular concrete shape.

The drain had quite a large number of manhole entrances in it.

This is a twin drain, with the occasional rare passage between the two tunnels. The tunnel we initally explored was a new one, while the ither tunnel was an older original tunnel. It would seem this was an expansion of an existing drain system to cater for increased water flows. This practice seems common in Australia and the US as well.

This is a big new chamber where the two tunnels meet, and continue on in a round concrete pipe.

Anymouse stands by one of the pipes in the chamber. The pipe I am in leads up to a large chamber we explored.

We came to a big grille which we had to hop over to and queese through before continuing.

The grille from the other side. I have never seen anything like that in a drain before.

It;s so big I can't get a good picture of it here.

At the far end of the chamber there's a pipe that leads on a bit to a nearby freeway.

This picture gives you the best idea of the size of this drain chamber. It's the second biggest one I have seen in Canada.

Back at the intersection chamber in the main drain tunnel.

Walking down the drain again back to where we got in.

The ceiling was a bit low, but comfortable enough to walk down.

Who said construction workers don't have a sense of humor?

This is the older tunnel. It's narrower and taller. Plus it is clearly more aged than the other tunnel.

We exit the drain.
