Paris Catacombs

One of the biggest complexes of rooms under Paris is the world war 2 German bunker. I visited this on my third trip into the Catacombs, my second trip alone. There is something foreboding about this bunker. It was scary to think about what would have happened in the place during world war 2. I have to admit I did not want to spend much time in there. Just enough to photograph and video it.

Hench-punks, just inside the entrance to the German Bunker.

Morbid and fascinating. Skeletons compete with Mayan sun gods.

The Mayan and the serpent.

Artwork in commemoration of the American moon landings. In the distance, a solid metal door into the German bunker.

A broken brick wall in the bunker with a passage beyond. There was no need to break the wall, you can walk around into this passage easily.

The interior of the room features artwork, and unusual plastic sheeting.

A fuse box and power controls in the center of the German bunker.

Another view of the electric's. The arrows on the wall point to different entrances of the bunker.

The stairway to the surface of the Bunker.

These arrows pointed to various entrances or sections of the bunker. The Rauchen Verbotten sign means no smoking. A small rabbit disagrees with this policy.

One of the many rooms in the German bunker.

Another room with local decoration. Though these rooms seem dismal I'm sure they were well sought after during bombing raids.

This doorway leads out of the north of the German Bunker into the passages there. The solid metal door has long been removed from it's hinges. The passages here once lead into the north of the catacombs but have been blocked since.

The passages in some parts of the bunker are well formed, with old blast doorways. Some wiring is still intact.

A small room in the German bunker. The message scrawled on the wall is very unusual. A box of junk remains on the floor.
