World Trip 2002 - Belgium

Champeau station was the last one on the line that we visited. It was remarkably intact considring that it was never finished. It is only at this station that you get a true idea of how long the line has been abandoned. The rusty overhead and the stark concrete of the station entrance show their age. The line here is quite over grown with trees, the platform is th only way through. We stopped here to take more photographs before proceeding on to the end of the line.

.

On the way to Champau

The next station, Champeau. I presume the structure in the foreground was supposed to be covered with a roof and form the access way to the platform. It is now just a water filled hole.

Jacob takes a photo as the underside of the platform is explored by Ben.

I stand on the abandoned and disused overgrown station platform. I am wearing my New York Police Department t short I brought at Laguardia Airport when flying out to Canada.

The four of us stand on the vacant track bed. I wish I had used a zoom on this time release photo.
There is Ben, Jacob, Petr and me, Jason.

Tunnel number 2

Walking on in to the tunnel. We had worked our way between the trees in the background which were growing over the abandoned railway trackbed.

The end of the line. Jacob stands in shoulder high bushes that made travel beyond the end of the second tunnel impossible.

On our way back we decided to do something with the many abandoned bikes left on the line.

I call it art.

At first it may be hard to work out what this is. It is a moss covered runner shoe. This railway has been abandoned longer than you might think. system.

My host and guide in Belgium was Patr Kazil. His excellent web site is here.
Jacob also has a great web site with pictures of the Charleroi trip here.
You can read more about the light rail lines of Charleroi On this site and there is a map here and here
