New perspective on the old bridge

Not really an urban exploration as such, this is however a favorite swimming hole around here. On summer weekends it can be crowded but on weekdays you'll likely have the whole area to yourself. Its also very crowded when the sandbass are running and you can catch blackbass and sunfish here just about anytime the water level is adequate. Spearfishing for giant gar was one of our favorite sports in High School and College, maybe not eco-friendly these days but gar have long been considered trash fish and depredate what anglers consider more desirable species. Plus Texas Parks and Wildlife says its Ok to spear'em. The Brazos River System is full of gar, long nose gar, alligator gar, spotted gar as well as buffalo fish and carp all described as rough species and not subject to game fish regs.

We have been fishing and swimming here since the mid 1970s, it never occurred to me that anyone would add it to the Location DB. Here are the only pics I have that survived my last hard drive failure.

My daughter was visiting from California, her dog was afraid of the water. We thought taking him out to the river with my dog (the black Lab) would encourage him to swim. My approach was to leave him behind running back and forth along the shore while we waded away and my dog swam away from him. This is how Ive gotten previous water-reluctant dogs to swim but in this case it failed. He ran back to the car the last safe place he knew.

My daughter having more patience than I coaxed him back to the water's edge, and a few steps at a time he waded out deeper and deeper until he could not touch bottom. Then he had to swim. Most dogs know how instinctively but some still have a fear of going in more than knee deep. The pics speak for themselves, he was swimming like a little alligator in no time.
