Passing by History

Everyone is familiar with visions of gondolas making their way through the canals of Venice, but less people are familiar with the less traveled outer islands in the Venetian lagoon. Those who make the trip by vaporetto out to Murano and Burano are rewarded with colorful delights, but there are even lesser known islands in Venice that I think will appeal to everyone here because they're abandoned.

At the end of September I went with my parents (who were here visiting) on a boat ride up the Brenta Canal from Stra. We stopped off at several villas on the way and the boat took us all the way to Venice, through the Grand Canal and let us off in St. Mark's Square. While passing through part of the lagoon we passed fairly close to this abandoned island called Isola di San Giorgio in Alga which features a ruined monastery. More info about the island of San Giorgio can be found here.
