Frigging leaves always fool lightmeters and thus blow highlights. Crank er down a stop; I shoot in the woods all the time and the camera always believes it must be night out.

I'm camera illiterate, and therefore what you just said is like chinese to me...I try to take good pics, but according to the ratings on UER, I don't!!

Sorry; but shooting in the woods lead many cameras to believe it is very dark; so the camera tends to overexpose the subject, which is supposed to be dark (ish) especially since the Jesus is nicely lit by direct sunlight.
In addition to that, leaves reflect a horrendous amount of light, and you end up with pics with the leaves with no highlights. The dark water doesn't help.
See how the bridge has no detail left? Nor do the rocks and branches.
If you underexpose, the detail can always be brought out with photo software, OVER expose and the Detail (highlights) are gone. I just tried to paintshop this pic and didn't improve it much. PS would have been able to correct the lighting if the pic was underexposed.
Commercial cameras strive for an "average" exposure". If you camera has EV compensation, use it. My other Fuji, the 205 has no manual control, but by using the EV comp I think like the camera and the n adjust accordingly.

Okay, now I'm following...I have a pretty decent camera, a Canon digital something or another. I remember reading about setting the exposure manualy - one of the many features I have failed to grasp. Okay, so I just tried it and I get it I think.

Great pics of Mt Airy. It's great that you were able to accomplish so much the day of the auction. You should be proud of this addition to the database! =)

Thanks Paisley - sorry we missed you. The place is wide open, and the auction will be held one more time, so get there while you can!!

Not all of us are "pros" with the camera. I just like seeing the locations.

Shots are fine. I especially like this one. As it was by accident, I guess you got lucky in a good way. =^.^=
