According to my soldier's handbook 50 cm of sand( in )bags is enough to protect from small arms fire.

They'll stop most small arms fire, and really reduce the effectiveness of what gets through.
Higher powered machine guns, though, will go through sandbags like a hot knoife through butter, I've seen it happen.

It looks like the sandbags stood up for a while, but then the holes finally leaked too much sand.

Standard ammo from small arms up to medium machine guns will stop dead in sandbags. Shrapnal too. Lots better than nothing. Maintaining the bags is a pain.

At least the RPF had sandbags... UNAMIR just had to hope they didn't get hit :)

They should have plastic slabs filled with gravel. That would be effective for machinegun fire.
