The vault-style escape hatch door. I believe the escape tubes were filled with sand (as shielding), and the guy opening the hatch would have to stand back and let it spill out (into the junction room) before climbing up.

I love those latch bars. Was there a pile of sand beneath this hatch?

The floor beneath was removed and the tunnel flooded, so if there was any sand it would have been under the water there. However I imagine it had probably been removed at the same time as that other part of the base was excavated.
